Asheville City Schools Board of Education Meeting Recap: June 9, 2025
On Monday, June 9th, the Asheville City Board of Education convened for its regular meeting, focusing on a range of topics from celebrating student and staff achievements to charting the district's future through strategic planning and budget considerations. The meeting, which began with a reaffirmation of the district's commitment to equity and anti-racist practices, provided valuable insights into the current state of Asheville City Schools and its direction forward.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to recognizing accomplishments across the district. The Asheville City Schools Foundation’s impactful work, highlighted by nearly $1 million invested in schools this year and recognition for their Racial Equity Ambassador Program (REAP), was a major point of celebration. Educators of the Year were honored, and successes in transitioning 5th graders to Asheville Middle School, alongside recognition of Nutrition staff and student initiatives like the "Do the Right Thing" program, showcased a vibrant and supportive learning environment. The upcoming brunch celebrating 15 retiring staff members – representing an impressive 343 years of service – was also acknowledged, demonstrating the dedication and longevity within the system.
The core of the meeting revolved around findings from a comprehensive data review presented by Julie Kanky and ConnectED. This review, incorporating Hanover reports, state report cards, student surveys, and community feedback, revealed both strengths and challenges. While strong student-teacher relationships were identified as a key asset, the data also highlighted increasing poverty among students, projected enrollment declines, and persistent achievement gaps, particularly for Black and Brown students. Discussions centered on navigating tension points regarding discipline approaches, balancing rigor with a whole-child focus, and ensuring equitable resource allocation within a system striving to remain small and personalized. The board ultimately agreed on recommendations centered around strengthening community belonging, providing relevant learning experiences, empowering educators, and prioritizing equity and student voice.
Regarding financial matters, the board engaged in a detailed discussion about long-term budget sustainability, emphasizing the need to move away from reliance on fund balance. With 85% of the budget allocated to personnel, careful review and control were deemed essential. The board will continue exploring options like maximizing state and federal funding, managing the local supplement effectively, and potentially adjusting work calendars to optimize staffing costs. Specific action items included a vote on student fees for the 2025-2026 school year and approval of a facility use fee schedule. Contracts and MOUs, including an updated English Learner (EL) contract, were also approved following board deliberation.
Looking ahead, the Board will continue refining the strategic plan with a detailed implementation plan to be developed. A special called work session is scheduled for June 24th, and the Board will focus on aligning budget decisions with the district’s strategic goals. Residents can find the complete schedule of Board meetings and other important information on the Asheville City Schools website, ensuring transparency and ongoing engagement in shaping the future of our schools. This meeting underscored a commitment to student success, fiscal responsibility, and creating an equitable learning environment for all students in Asheville City Schools.
