Asheville City Schools Board of Education Meeting Recap - October 13, 2025

On October 13, 2025, the Asheville City Board of Education held its regular meeting, attended by board members Rebecca (chairing in place of absent Sarah Thornburg and George Seberg) and others participating remotely. The meeting focused on recognizing achievements, reviewing program updates, addressing community concerns, and approving key actions impacting students, staff, and the school system. This recap highlights the key decisions, discussions, and next steps for Asheville City Schools.

The meeting began with a commitment to equity and anti-racist policies, setting a tone for addressing important community needs. Several recognitions followed, celebrating the accomplishments of students and staff. Lindsay DeVito was named Beginning Teacher of the Year, and Lynn Mayer received the Exceptional Children's Teacher of the Year award. The board also acknowledged the success of the college fair, the recognition of National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalists, and the positive outcomes of a community partnership summit. A particularly poignant moment was the recognition of a 10th-grade civics class’s exploration of local history through a walking tour. These recognitions underscored the dedication and success within the school system.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to an update on the William Randolph program, which provides individualized support for students in both high school (ECA) and middle school (Cougar Academy). Carrie Buchanan and Sybil Jefferson presented on the program's commitment to student pathways and support. While student testimonials highlighted the program’s positive impact, the board engaged in a discussion about potentially transitioning the program from a “program” to having its own school number. This change could impact funding, staffing, and overall program visibility, and the board will continue this discussion at future meetings. The community’s voice was also heard during the public comment period. Soren Peterson advocated for increased teacher pay to combat rising living costs and teacher turnover, while Chris Gordon presented recommendations from the Asheville Community Reparations Commission, emphasizing the need for improved school climate, increased Black teacher representation, and free early childhood education. Carson Bridges highlighted the success of a recent collaborative session between the Asheville City Association of Educators (ACAE) and district administration, signaling a positive step towards policy improvements and staff support.

The board took action on several key items. A consent agenda was approved, encompassing routine budget expenditures, a one-time staff retention bonus, and policies related to inclement weather and telework. Notably, the discussion and vote on the Superintendent’s Contract Extension was postponed to the following month due to the absence of key voting members. Several policies were given a second reading and will require votes at a future meeting. The board also approved a contract with Carolina Thomas LLC. Finally, the Student Advisory Council received recognition for their work and will continue developing action plans for student involvement and grading policies.

Looking ahead, Dr. Maggie will lead work sessions to introduce six key conditions, and the ACAE will hold community listening sessions. The board’s discussion regarding the potential transition of William Randolph to a school number will also continue. Citizens can stay informed about these and other developments by attending future board meetings or reviewing official meeting minutes and agendas, which are available on the Asheville City Schools website. This meeting demonstrated the board’s commitment to celebrating successes, addressing community concerns, and working collaboratively to improve the educational experience for all Asheville City Schools students.
