Asheville City Schools Board Meeting Recap: November 10, 2025
The Asheville City Board of Education held its regular meeting on November 10, 2025, with a full attendance of board members and community stakeholders present. The meeting began with heartfelt moments of remembrance for recently deceased student Jams, celebrating his musical talent and kindness, and honoring Veterans Day, acknowledging the many veterans within the school district. This set a tone of appreciation and community focus for the evening’s discussions.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to addressing staff working conditions, stemming from requests made by the Asheville City Association of Educators (ACAE). Following robust discussion, the board approved a compromise: staff who can perform their duties remotely will have that option during inclement weather, essential workers (those required to be on-site) will receive hazard pay during such conditions, and visitor access to schools will be restricted during school hours. The board also formally approved a contract with the Asheville Police Department for School Resource Officers, extending Superintendent Maggie Fuhrman’s contract, and unanimously accepted a clean financial audit report highlighting the district's sound financial management. The board also approved the district’s comprehensive safety plan, ensuring a safe learning environment for all students and staff.
Community voices were heard through a presentation from FACTS (Families of Asheville City Schools), who shared their advocacy efforts related to school consolidation feasibility studies, community listening circles, and advocating for increased public school funding. Their presentation highlighted the importance of parent input in shaping educational policy, and their commitment to promoting public schools within the community. The board also acknowledged positive news shared by Kim Deckant, including recognition of the Asheville Middle School boys soccer team's conference championship victory and celebrating Lucy S. Herring Elementary’s music education day, as well as successful district-wide enrollment events and fall festivals held at various schools.
Looking ahead, the Board is embarking on a strategic planning process to define the district's vision, mission, and core values. This will involve gathering input from students, staff, and the community to ensure a plan that reflects their needs. Discussions are also underway with Buncombe County officials regarding a more consistent and predictable funding model, a proposal from the county will be reviewed at an upcoming public meeting. The ACAE and board administration will reconvene next week to finalize the response to the ACAE’s requests.
This meeting underscored a commitment to supporting staff, ensuring student safety, and fostering community engagement within Asheville City Schools.
