Buncombe County Schools Board of Education Meeting Recap - August 14, 2025

On August 14th, the Buncombe County Schools Board of Education convened to discuss priorities for the upcoming school year and address ongoing challenges. The meeting, which began with a moment of silence honoring those impacted by recent floods in Texas, welcomed new board members Laurel Bates (Secretary) and Chip Cody (Assistant Superintendent). Overall, the meeting highlighted a commitment to student success, strategic planning, and community engagement.

A significant portion of the meeting centered on preparing for the 2025-2026 school year. Superintendent Jackson presented a positive overview of summer programs, noting successful graduation ceremonies, reading camps, and career technical education (CTE) initiatives. He also announced the return of early college and career innovation programs, with all schools resuming classes on August 25th. Importantly, the district will continue providing free breakfast and lunch for all students – a vital resource for many families. The board acknowledged the ongoing financial strain due to declining state and federal funding, but praised staff for navigating these challenges without any layoffs. They formally approved student fees for the upcoming year, while also noting a potential future review of uniform policies.

Beyond immediate preparations, the board formally introduced the theme for 2025-2026: "#LeadTheClimb." Building on previous themes, this message encourages growth, courage, and collaboration within the school system. A major focus was also dedicated to "Elevate BCS," a new instructional framework designed to create welcoming classrooms, intentional learning experiences, and foster a sense of belonging for all students. Principals will be launching this framework with their staff next Wednesday, marking a key step in implementing the new approach.

The meeting also included recognition of numerous student and staff achievements, including national accolades for Erwin & T.C. Robertson High School’s FCCLA chapter and individual awards for students like Annabelle Cooper, Camden Shelton, Peyton Sparks, Violet Edwards, Braden Nicotopoulos and Mia Rowland. Lacey Davis from Irwin High School was also recognized as a finalist for the prestigious Burroughs Welcome Fund North Carolina Career and Technical Education Teacher of the Year Award. Finally, the board proudly announced the launch of "Buncombe County Schools Parent University," an online resource offering short videos explaining school programs and policies – a valuable tool for parents to stay informed.

During the public comment period, Reverend Craig White from the Campaign for Southern Equality raised concerns about representation of diverse communities within school advisory councils. He urged the board to prioritize greater inclusivity and emphasized the importance of community involvement in shaping school policies. In response, the board committed to having its policy committee review the advisory council member selection process to address these concerns and ensure equitable representation.

Looking ahead, several key action items were identified. The Board will continue advocating for increased funding at all levels of government to support students and schools. They also plan to expand the Parent University video series, providing even more accessible information for families. The ongoing discussion regarding advisory council representation will be a priority for the policy committee, demonstrating the board’s commitment to addressing community concerns and fostering inclusive school governance. This meeting underscored a dedication to providing high-quality education while navigating financial challenges and actively engaging with the community.
