Buncombe County Schools Board of Education Meeting Recap - February 13, 2025

On February 13, 2025, the Buncombe County Schools Board of Education held a regular meeting focused on recognizing achievements, reviewing strategic initiatives, and addressing community concerns. The meeting began with a patriotic opening ceremony featuring JROTC students from Robertson High School, followed by acknowledgements of Black History Month, School Counselor Appreciation Week, and North Carolina School Bus Driver Appreciation Week – highlighting the dedication of these vital contributors to the school system. Superintendent Dr. Jackson’s report celebrated recent graduation milestones, including the inaugural class from the Buncombe County Center for Career Innovation, and praised the efforts of school counselors and bus drivers.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to recognizing outstanding individuals and programs within the district. Several schools received prestigious awards, including Candler Elementary School's Pro Patria Award for supporting National Guard and Reserve members. Student achievements in the Math Counts competition were celebrated, alongside the announcement and honoring of District Teachers of the Year from various zones. Leah Jordan of Valley Springs Middle School was also recognized with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching, further showcasing the district's commitment to academic excellence.

The board engaged in a detailed discussion regarding Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, with Director Michelle Smith presenting on how CTE aligns with the district's strategic plan. The presentation emphasized initiatives designed to prepare students for future careers, including career development planning for eighth graders and partnerships with local businesses. This focus on CTE reflects the board's commitment to providing students with practical skills and pathways to success beyond high school.

Public comment provided a platform for residents to voice their concerns and perspectives on various topics, including book selections, parental rights, transgender issues, school safety, funding, and curriculum. A diverse range of viewpoints were shared, demonstrating the community's engagement in shaping the direction of the school system. While opinions varied significantly, the board listened attentively to all comments, acknowledging the importance of addressing these concerns.

The meeting concluded with several key action items and decisions. The board unanimously approved guaranteed maximum prices (GMP) for entrance and lobby reconfiguration projects at Inca High School, Johnson Elementary School, and North Windy Ridge Intermediate School, utilizing funds from Article 39 (the dedicated sales tax for school capital projects). A School Consolidation Study, conducted by Prismatic Services, was presented and accepted; the study recommended against consolidation. The board also agreed to support a joint letter with Asheville City Schools, affirming their compliance with state requirements.

Looking ahead, the Board will continue to address concerns raised during public comment and work towards providing a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
