Woodfin Town Council Meeting Recap – July 15, 2025

The Woodfin Town Council convened on July 15, 2025, for a meeting focused on planning for the future of Woodfin’s infrastructure and community development. All council members were present, with Councilman Cohen requesting a specific item be moved to new business, demonstrating ongoing discussion about board appointments. The meeting covered a range of topics from bicycle and pedestrian planning to water district updates, subdivision proposals, and even a discussion about the council's own responsibilities.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the presentation of the draft "Walk-Bike Woodfin Plan" by McAdams Consulting. This plan outlines strategies to enhance walkability and bikeability throughout Woodfin, prioritizing safety improvements and exploring opportunities for developer collaboration. Importantly, adopting this plan would unlock access to full funding from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT) for pedestrian and bicycle projects, a key benefit highlighted during the presentation. The council agreed to review the plan further at their August meeting, signaling a commitment to exploring this opportunity.

Beyond planning initiatives, the council received an update from Seth Eckerd, Executive Director of the Woodfin Water Sanitary District. Mr. Eckerd provided a comprehensive overview of the district’s history, operations, and long-term capital improvement plan. He emphasized the district's unique status as an independent entity serving a wide area, and highlighted ongoing efforts to secure state and federal grants to support their 10-year plan. Residents were also given the opportunity to ask questions, with one resident inquiring about connecting Riverside Drive to the River Arts District.

The council also took action on several specific items, unanimously approving a preliminary subdivision plan for 13 single-family lots off Riverside Drive and closing Desperate Lane, a small right-of-way in the Crest Mountain community. A more contentious decision involved the reappointment of Jackie Craig to the ABC Board; after a vote, the council decided to post the position and invite Ms. Craig to reapply, reflecting differing perspectives on the appointment process. Finally, a portion of the meeting was dedicated to an internal discussion initiated by Council members Kahn and Irvin regarding the responsibilities and authority of the mayor and council, referencing relevant North Carolina General Statutes. This discussion underscored a commitment to transparency and adherence to legal guidelines in council operations.

While no residents formally signed up for public comment, a brief exchange occurred regarding the potential for reducing the speed limit on Riverside Drive. Town Manager Shannon will follow up with council members regarding this request. Overall, the meeting demonstrated a focus on proactive planning and responsible governance, with several key decisions paving the way for future improvements to Woodfin’s infrastructure and community life. Residents can expect further discussion on the Walk-Bike Woodfin Plan at the August meeting, and should stay informed about opportunities to participate in shaping Woodfin’s future.
