Woodfin Park & Greenway Committee Meeting Recap: A Focus on Parks, Sustainability, and Community

On May 14, 2025, the Woodfin Park and Greenway Advisory Committee convened to discuss a range of initiatives aimed at enhancing parks, greenways, and community life in Woodfin. The meeting covered everything from ongoing arts programs to a significant name change for the committee itself, providing valuable insights into current and future projects impacting residents.

A major decision made during the meeting was the renaming of the committee to the Parks and Community Enrichment Committee. Following a robust discussion, members felt this new name more accurately reflects the committee’s expanded focus beyond just parks and greenways, encompassing areas like sustainability, energy, stormwater management, open space, landscaping, art, and overall community well-being. This change aims to better represent the breadth of their work and its impact on Woodfin residents.

Beyond the name change, a significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to discussing the newly developed Landscape Ordinance. This ordinance, applicable to new construction projects, outlines requirements for street trees, landscaping in parking areas, buffer yards between residential and non-residential zones, screening for outdoor spaces, and tree preservation incentives. Committee members were encouraged to provide feedback on the draft ordinance, with a notable suggestion from a committee member to incorporate Cherokee names for the French Broad River into signage and consult with tribal members, demonstrating a commitment to cultural sensitivity.

Several ongoing projects were also highlighted. The committee received an update on the Woodfin Arts Program, acknowledging the impact of the end of Zoe Codd’s AmeriCorps position but celebrating her accomplishments and expressing support for her future endeavors. Discussions regarding Roypo Park’s redevelopment centered on replacing aging playground equipment and exploring creative play options, such as sidewalk chalk, in place of a previously removed mister. Finally, the committee reviewed proposed interpretive signage for Riverside Park, again with a suggestion to incorporate Cherokee names and flip the map orientation.

The meeting also included important updates on hurricane recovery efforts, highlighting the transition to state oversight for debris removal and progress at Silver Line Park. Residents will be interested to learn that Geneva Maney Park, formerly a playground, is being transformed into a vibrant community garden.

What's Next? Several action items emerged from the meeting, including outreach to Cherokee representatives regarding river signage and staff review of feedback on the Landscape Ordinance. The committee will also be seeking nominations for a new chairperson at their next meeting, and addressing the upcoming expiration of Ann’s term.

The Woodfin Park and Greenway Committee's work directly impacts the quality of life for all residents, ensuring accessible parks, sustainable practices, and enriching community spaces.
