Woodfin Parks & Greenways Committee Meeting Recap: August 14, 2024
The Town of Woodfin Parks and Greenways Advisory Committee convened on August 14, 2024, to discuss a range of important topics related to parks management, volunteer efforts, and ongoing development projects. The meeting was attended by committee members and town staff, focusing on improvements to Woodfin's parks system and recreational opportunities for residents.
A significant portion of the meeting centered on establishing a robust volunteer management system to support the newly proposed Parks Ambassador Program. After careful consideration, the committee voted to recommend a hybrid approach: utilizing existing Microsoft Office tools alongside a specialized municipal management system called "Logistics." This blended strategy aims to balance cost-effectiveness with the need for features like background screening, scheduling, and service reporting. The committee also approved a draft budget for the Parks Ambassador Program, which includes funding for both the Logistics system and incentive items to recognize volunteer contributions – initially focusing on safety vests and notebooks, with plans for future rewards like water bottles and backpacks. The committee further refined the program's mission and vision statements to clearly articulate its purpose and goals, ensuring alignment with community needs.
Beyond volunteer management, the committee received updates on several key projects impacting Woodfin residents. Construction at Taylor’s Wave continues to progress, with ongoing work on the cofferdam and debris removal. Staff emphasized safety considerations related to the whitewater area created by the construction, highlighting their commitment to ensuring a safe environment. Updates were also provided on the Silverline Park Master Plan, noting delays in restroom construction pending final design approvals. Progress was shared on the community garden project, including demolition of old playground equipment and site preparation for the new space. Finally, discussions regarding the bike/pedestrian plan highlighted ongoing stakeholder meetings with Woodfin Elementary School to improve safety and connectivity for students.
There was no direct public comment during the meeting, however committee members engaged in thoughtful discussions about potential safety concerns at Taylor’s Wave and opportunities to connect the Parks Ambassador Program with Woodfin Elementary School. A recurring theme throughout the meeting was a desire to document and celebrate the historical significance of the Taylor’s Wave area, potentially through a display or sculpture.
Looking ahead, several action items were assigned to town staff. Zoe (Staff) will finalize the Parks Ambassador Program's mission and vision statements, investigate streamlining data import between Microsoft Forms and Logistics, and obtain quotes for branded safety vests. Staff will continue stakeholder engagement regarding the bike/pedestrian plan, monitor construction progress at Taylor’s Wave and address any safety concerns, and explore options for documenting the history of the area. Regular newsletters and video updates will be used to keep key stakeholders informed about the wave construction project. These ongoing efforts demonstrate a commitment to enhancing Woodfin’s parks and greenways for the benefit of all residents.
