Woodfin Town Council Meeting Recap – July 16, 2024

The Woodfin Town Council convened on July 16, 2024, for a meeting focused on ongoing projects, budget planning, and establishing new initiatives to benefit the community. The meeting was well-attended by council members and proceeded smoothly, with a focus on practical updates and laying the groundwork for future improvements.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to approving a comprehensive consent agenda, streamlining several routine items. This included contracts with Equinox Environmental and S2O Engineering for work on Riverside Park and Taylor’s Wave, as well as securing materials testing services. A minor update to the town's drug and alcohol policy, clarifying requirements for CDL drivers, was also approved without significant discussion.

During the public comment period, there were no residents who chose to address the council. Following this, several presentations and reports provided valuable insights into ongoing town projects. Town Manager Shannon Tuck updated the council on contracts related to Riverside Park and Taylor’s Wave, confirming that all projects remain within budget. Discussions centered on finalizing the Fiscal Year 2024/2025 budget, with finance staff preparing for an upcoming audit. The council also explored potential directions for the Community Grant program, with a focus on emergency assistance as a key area of support. A summer newsletter is in the works, and council members are encouraged to contribute content ideas. Council member McCallister suggested a periodic recycling tip sheet, aiming to reduce "wishful recycling" and improve the town's overall recycling efforts. A comprehensive update to the Code of Ordinances is underway, promising increased stakeholder involvement in the process.

The council made two key decisions regarding new subcommittees. Recognizing the need to review and update landscape and open space regulations, a temporary subcommittee was established, comprised of Council Members Young, Edgerton, and Thornton. This group will focus on updating regulations within the development code. Additionally, a subcommittee was formed to develop a performance plan for Town Manager Shannon Tuck, with Council Members Irvin Cohen and Con taking on this task. The council adjourned to a closed executive session, as permitted by state law, to discuss legal, personnel, or contractual matters with their attorney.
