Woodfin PGAC Meeting Recap: July 10, 2024 – Parks, Greenways & Community Improvements
The Woodfin Parks, Greenway & Advisory Committee (PGAC) convened on July 10th to discuss a range of projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing Woodfin’s parks, greenways, and community spaces. The meeting provided updates on ongoing construction projects, approved key decisions regarding park amenities, and laid the groundwork for a new volunteer program designed to foster community stewardship of local parks.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to a presentation and discussion surrounding the proposed Parks Ambassador Program. This exciting initiative, spearheaded by Zoe, aims to engage residents as volunteers who will receive training and regularly check on our parks, helping to ensure their upkeep and safety. The committee recognized the importance of a strong recruitment strategy for this program, acknowledging that attracting volunteers to local government initiatives can be challenging. Zoe will now focus on developing a detailed budget for the program, including costs associated with background checks and volunteer incentives, as well as finalizing application materials and training resources.
Beyond the Parks Ambassador Program, the committee approved important decisions regarding existing park projects. After careful consideration of cost and design options, they voted to select the Cortez model for restrooms at Silverline Park. Updates were also provided on the ongoing construction of Riverside Park and the wave pool, including approvals for modifications to the cofferdam design. The committee received positive news regarding the French Broad and Beaverdam Creek Greenway project, reviewing survey results that will inform future planning efforts. Finally, the committee received an update on a partnership with Bountiful Cities to establish a community garden and secure grant funding, with the legal team working towards finalizing the agreement.
While there were no public comments during the designated forum, a committee member took time to acknowledge and appreciate the progress being made on park and greenway projects, reflecting on past efforts to improve Woodfin’s recreational spaces. The committee also learned that the YMCA will be establishing a local food market in Woodfin starting in August, further enhancing community resources.
Looking ahead, several key action items were identified. Committee members will review Coral’s communication plan over the next month, with further discussion planned for the next meeting. Zoe will coordinate stakeholder meetings related to the bike/pedestrian plan, and continue working on volunteer recruitment for the Parks Ambassador Program. Residents can expect to see further developments in these areas, as well as continued progress on the Riverside Park and wave pool construction. This meeting demonstrated a strong commitment from the PGAC to improving Woodfin’s parks, greenways and community well-being.
