Woodfin Town Council Meeting Recap: June 18, 2024 – Progress, Partnerships & Planning for the Future
The Woodfin Town Council convened on June 18th, addressing a range of important topics impacting the community. The meeting provided updates on ongoing projects, heard from valuable community partners, and made key decisions regarding the town's operations and future development. Overall, the meeting showcased Woodfin’s commitment to proactive planning, community collaboration, and responsible fiscal management.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the work of the Woodfin Water Board. Larry Hopkins, representing the board, delivered a comprehensive report detailing their accomplishments over the past year, including successfully finding a new executive director, upgrading cybersecurity measures to protect against cyberattacks, and conducting crucial studies on PFAS chemicals in the water supply – thankfully showing no contamination. The board's decision to live-stream meetings and collaborate with the Town Council on information sharing was also highlighted. Following Hopkins' presentation, Walt Brewer raised concerns about street light compliance with dark sky ordinances and inquired about the status of a native plant proposal, prompting further investigation by town staff.
Beyond infrastructure updates, the council heard from Andrea Golden of Poder Emma Community Ownership, a vital organization focused on preventing displacement and preserving affordable housing within the Emma community. Golden presented a detailed overview of Poder Emma's initiatives, including their neighborhood membership program, home repair services for mobile homes, and innovative real estate cooperatives aimed at providing permanent housing solutions. This presentation underscored the importance of community-led efforts in addressing critical housing challenges and highlighted a potential opportunity for collaboration between the town and Poder Emma on affordable housing initiatives.
In terms of formal decisions, the council approved the agenda and a consent agenda without discussion. A key vote was taken to formally appoint Connie Wald to the Woodfin Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, recognizing her experience and dedication. Most notably, the council approved the Town of Woodfin's fiscal year 2024-2025 annual budget, maintaining the current property tax rate of $0.33 per $100 of valuation – a testament to the council's commitment to responsible fiscal management and providing stability for Woodfin residents.
Discussion also centered on a proposed Street Acceptance Policy, designed to establish minimum standards and processes for accepting new streets into the town's inventory. While no formal approval was given, the council deferred consideration to a future meeting where a resolution will be added to the consent agenda. Finally, Town Manager Shannon Powers provided updates on various town departments, including progress on the comprehensive plan, preparations for renovations at the Friends Montessori Community Center (a cost-sharing proposal to be presented later), and ongoing stormwater management projects.
Looking ahead, several action items were identified. The Town Council will reach out to Duke Energy regarding street light compliance and investigate the status of the native plant proposal. A cost-sharing proposal for renovations related to the Friends Montessori School lease will be considered at a future meeting. The council also committed to scheduling a meeting with Buncombe County and Asheville officials to explore collaborative efforts on affordable housing. Residents can mark their calendars for a groundbreaking ceremony celebrating the Riverside Park expansion, scheduled for Friday, June 21st. This meeting demonstrated Woodfin's dedication to proactive planning and collaborative partnerships, ensuring a vibrant and sustainable future for the community.
