Woodfin Town Council Meeting Recap: April 16, 2024
The Woodfin Town Council convened on April 16th for a meeting focused on community support, ongoing projects, and addressing resident concerns. The agenda was approved with a minor adjustment to remove an item related to a family matter, and the consent agenda – containing routine approvals – was passed without discussion. The meeting provided updates on several key areas impacting Woodfin residents, culminating in a significant decision regarding property annexation.
A notable portion of the meeting was dedicated to public comment, showcasing a strong sense of community engagement. Laura Cleveland, representing Woodfin Elementary School, expressed gratitude for the town's support of organizations like ABCCM and highlighted a growing need to address housing challenges within the community. Residents Daniel Embler and Ron Wilburn presented a request to close an unused right-of-way on Fox Road, aiming to streamline property lines. Judy Butler provided a positive update on the community food distribution program, noting its vital role in assisting over 5,800 families. Finally, Drew Ball advocated for continued efforts to reduce plastic waste, referencing recent polling data demonstrating public support.
Following public comment, the Council received several presentations and reports. Mayor McAllister read an Earth Day proclamation emphasizing environmental sustainability, while Cheryl Olson from ABCCM detailed the impact of the town's grant in assisting residents with rent and utility payments. Ann Keller from the Asheville-Buncombe Riverfront Commission presented an overview of regional riverfront development and environmental protection efforts. Town Manager Shannon Tuck provided a comprehensive update on various administrative matters, including contract approvals for public safety programs, website development for the Woodfin Business Association, and ongoing improvements to the community center. She also addressed concerns about a sinkhole near Riverside Drive/Woodfin and provided updates on the greenway project and police department recruitment.
The Council’s most significant decision centered around a request to close the right-of-way between 35 Fox Road and 8 New Hope Road. After a public hearing, the Council voted unanimously to oppose any efforts at de-annexation for properties west of the French Broad River, effectively denying the closure request. A broader discussion ensued regarding potential de-annexation of properties in that area, with concerns raised about costs, liability, and potential impacts on town services. The Council ultimately decided against pursuing further action on this matter at this time, reaffirming the town's commitment to maintaining its current boundaries.
Looking ahead, several action items were identified. Council members requested further information from the Woodfin Water District regarding their plans for the old Craggy Bridge waterline. The Council reiterated its commitment to supporting local organizations like ABCCM and addressing housing challenges within the community. Finally, with budget season underway, ongoing discussions are taking place regarding the fiscal year 2025 budget. The Council adjourned into an executive session to discuss personnel matters, details of which are not publicly available. Residents can stay informed about these and other town initiatives by visiting the Woodfin Town website or attending future council meetings.
