Woodfin PGAC Meeting Recap: Parks, Gardens, and Community Development Updates (February 14, 2024)
On February 14th, the Woodfin Planning & Growth Advisory Committee (PGAC) convened to discuss a range of initiatives aimed at enhancing Woodfin's parks, community spaces, and overall quality of life. The meeting covered significant ground, from updates on existing park projects to proposals for new community resources. This recap highlights the key discussions and decisions made, outlining what residents can expect moving forward.
The meeting began with routine administrative approvals, quickly confirming the agenda and minutes from the previous December meeting. A major focus of the evening was Phase 2 of Silver Line Park, with a presentation detailing preliminary plans for new amenities. Residents can anticipate the addition of pickleball courts (including an ADA-accessible option) and a restroom facility, designed to integrate seamlessly into the park's landscape. A lively discussion ensued regarding potential alternatives for utilizing space, with some committee members suggesting a playground instead of an additional pickleball court. The committee will now review this presentation and provide feedback, which will inform the development of a comprehensive master plan for Silver Line Park. This is an exciting step towards expanding recreational opportunities within Woodfin, ensuring accessibility and catering to diverse interests.
Beyond park expansions, the PGAC also gave considerable attention to a proposal for a new Woodfin Community Garden at Geneva Manning Park. Presented by the Woodfin Community Garden Steering Committee, this initiative envisions a space with both allotment plots for residents and a community plot dedicated to growing produce for those facing food insecurity. The proposal was well-received, with the committee unanimously voting to recommend it to the Town Council. If approved, this garden promises to foster community engagement, provide access to fresh produce, and offer educational opportunities. The committee will be seeking grants and sponsorships to support the garden's establishment, with a request for town assistance in removing existing playground equipment, grading the site, and providing essential utilities.
Further discussions centered on a proposed Parks Ambassador program aimed at boosting community engagement and park stewardship. Zoe presented the concept, outlining potential roles, recruitment strategies, and data collection methods. While still in its early stages, this program seeks to leverage volunteers (and potentially paid ambassadors) to raise awareness about Woodfin's parks, promote responsible usage, and build a stronger sense of community ownership. The committee will continue exploring this idea in conjunction with the Volunteer Management Subcommittee, revisiting it at a future meeting.
Finally, the committee received an update on the Riverside Park & Wave project, which has faced budgetary challenges. The town is currently re-advertising bids with a phased approach to manage costs effectively, aiming for Wave construction during low-flow months (June-September) and hoping to finalize funding by mid to late April. This project remains a priority for Woodfin, and the town is working diligently to deliver this valuable amenity despite unforeseen circumstances.
What's Next?
- The Town Council will consider the recommendation to approve the Woodfin Community Garden proposal.
- The PGAC will continue discussions on the Parks Ambassador program, collaborating with the Volunteer Management Subcommittee.
- The town is actively pursuing bids for the Riverside Park & Wave project, aiming to finalize funding and move forward with construction.
- Residents are encouraged to provide feedback on the Silver Line Park Phase 2 plans as they develop.
This meeting demonstrated Woodfin's commitment to proactive planning and community-driven initiatives, ensuring that the town continues to grow in a way that enhances the lives of all residents.
