Woodfin Town Council Meeting Recap: July 18, 2023
The Woodfin Town Council convened on Tuesday, July 18th, for its regular monthly meeting. The session covered a range of important topics impacting the community, from infrastructure improvements to public safety and local governance. All council members were present, ensuring a full quorum for decision-making.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to key decisions and approvals. The council unanimously approved Ordinance 2023-18, an Emergency Management Ordinance that empowers the Mayor to declare a local state of emergency without needing to call a full council meeting. This change is designed to streamline response times during emergencies, allowing for quicker action when needed most. Additionally, the council approved an interlocal agreement with Buncombe County for the Public Safety Interoperability Program (PSIP), a crucial step towards enhanced data sharing and resource collaboration with other agencies, ultimately improving public safety for Woodfin residents. Finally, the council addressed vacancies on the ABC Board, appointing Bob Sturr as a new member and Tom Spradling as chair. Discussions centered on improving the profitability of the Woodfin ABC store, emphasizing transparency and communication within the board.
Beyond formal votes, several important discussions took place regarding ongoing town initiatives. The Town Manager’s report highlighted challenges in police recruitment, a national trend impacting many communities. A detailed engineering assessment of the town's stormwater infrastructure was presented, with a follow-up presentation from Bob Dennis scheduled for a future meeting. The Town Hall/Town Center Initiative steering committee is currently focused on redeveloping the existing town hall site, eliminating the community center as an option. The committee will hold a "big ideas" meeting on August 1st, providing an opportunity for community input. Finally, the council acknowledged ongoing efforts to regulate short-term rentals within Woodfin, noting that 214 have been identified.
Community engagement was present during the public comment period, where Mr. Kenneth Kahn publicly endorsed Bob Sterrano’s candidacy for the ABC Board, citing his qualifications and character. This demonstrated a level of citizen participation in local governance.
Looking ahead, several action items were identified. The Town Manager and staff will continue their efforts to recruit police officers, addressing a critical need within the department. The steering committee for the Town Hall/Town Center Initiative will continue their work, and residents are encouraged to attend the August 1st "big ideas" meeting. The presentation on the stormwater infrastructure assessment report will provide valuable insights into necessary improvements and potential impacts for Woodfin residents. This meeting demonstrated the council's commitment to addressing key community needs and proactively planning for Woodfin’s future.
