Woodfin Town Council Meeting Recap: June 20, 2023 – Progress & New Initiatives
The Woodfin Town Council convened on June 20, 2023, for a productive meeting focused on ongoing projects, financial planning, and setting the stage for future growth. The session included a range of discussions from routine approvals to significant decisions impacting residents and businesses alike. A full agenda was approved, paving the way for a comprehensive review of town matters.
A significant portion of the meeting centered on financial matters and infrastructure improvements. The Council unanimously approved a stormwater utility fund and associated fees, which will be implemented in August. This new system establishes tiered rates for single-family homes and an ERU (Equivalent Residential Unit) rate for commercial properties, designed to fund crucial stormwater management efforts. Following a public hearing where one resident raised concerns about impervious surface calculations, the town clarified their GIS-based methodology and dispute resolution process. Additionally, the Council approved a contract with Ray, Ben Garner & Kingsdale for an independent audit of the town’s finances – a vital step in ensuring fiscal responsibility and transparency. The Mayor underscored the importance of maintaining a healthy fund balance, emphasizing its role in supporting town operations and future investments.
Beyond finances, the meeting highlighted several key initiatives underway within Woodfin. A presentation from ABCCM detailed their impactful partnership with the town, showcasing how emergency funds provided crucial rental and utility assistance to 30 local households. A resident's story of securing employment after receiving support was shared, demonstrating the tangible benefits of community collaboration. The Town Manager’s report provided updates on a wide range of projects, including the Woodfin Greenway Blueway, Silver Line Park design project, and Riverside Park fundraising efforts. The Council also formally adopted a set of strategic goals developed earlier in the year, outlining priorities like providing excellent town services, promoting equity and inclusion, investing in infrastructure, building community through police service, and fostering a sense of place.
Community input was welcomed during the public comment period, demonstrating the town's commitment to resident engagement. The discussion regarding impervious surface calculations highlighted a desire for clarity and accuracy in fee assessments, prompting the town to reiterate their process.
Looking ahead, several key action items will shape Woodfin’s progress in the coming months. The Town Center Steering Committee will continue its 16-week process to develop a report and drawings, with a final presentation expected in late September/early October. The town will also seek new bids for the salt bin project, potentially adjusting design specifications to reduce costs. The planning department will continue working on the comprehensive plan, aiming for a draft release before year-end. Finally, ongoing recruitment efforts will continue to address vacancies within the Police Department, ensuring continued community safety and service. The Town Manager emphasized Woodfin’s progress as a small town making big strides, reflecting the Council's dedication to building a thriving and resilient community.
