Woodfin Parks & Greenways Advisory Committee Meeting Recap – February 8, 2023

On February 8th, the Woodfin Parks and Greenways Advisory Committee (PGAC) convened to discuss ongoing projects, gather community feedback, and plan for future improvements across Woodfin’s parks and greenways. The meeting featured a presentation from local students, discussions on key projects like Silverline Park and Geneva Manning Park, and introductions of two new committee members.

Community Voices Shape Park Planning: A significant portion of the meeting centered around insights gathered by students from the French Broad River Academy Math Lab. They conducted a survey of residents living within walking distance of Maney Park, seeking input on the park’s current state and potential improvements. The survey revealed a mixed sentiment – some residents enjoy the park, while others feel it’s underutilized and needs attention. Residents expressed a desire for more trees, family-friendly features like playground equipment, and specific amenities such as a dog area, basketball court, and fitness space. While the pickleball court was appreciated by those who used it, its overall usage wasn't as high as hoped. This valuable feedback will inform future decisions regarding park improvements and ensure they align with community needs.

Silverline Park Transformation & Wave Feature Planning: Discussions also focused on the demolition of the Silverline Park building, paving the way for new pickleball courts. The committee is exploring options to salvage materials during demolition, potentially partnering with New Life Church to recover items like insulation and aluminum. A key topic was the upcoming wave feature at Riverside Park, with discussions revolving around forming a "Wave Modeling Task Force" to assist with event management and oversight. The committee emphasized the need for consistent branding and marketing efforts as fundraising activities related to the wave feature continue, ensuring a cohesive message for residents. The Town Council will soon vote on a surplus resolution allowing the town to put the Silverline Park buildings up for bid.

New Faces & Future Considerations: The PGAC welcomed two new members: Eric Barsati, Director of Woodfin YMCA, and Wayne, a resident from the Riverwalk community. Their expertise will be valuable as the committee tackles upcoming projects. The meeting also revisited recommendations from the recent "State of the Parks Review," specifically considering the feasibility of installing a fitness pad at Geneva Manning Park.

What's Next? Key Action Items for Woodfin Residents: Several important steps are underway as a result of this meeting:

  • Demolition Bids: The town will be reviewing bids for the demolition of the Silverline Park building.
  • Salvage Efforts: New Life Church will provide a list of materials they're interested in salvaging from the demolition.
  • Wave Feature Task Force: Eric Barsati will be reaching out to French Broad River Academy to recruit members for the Wave Modeling Task Force.
  • Fitness Pad Feasibility: Committee members will continue to evaluate the possibility of adding a fitness pad at Geneva Manning Park.
  • Marketing Strategy: Discussions will continue regarding branding guidelines and a comprehensive marketing plan for the wave feature.

The PGAC meeting highlighted the importance of community input in shaping Woodfin’s parks and greenways. By listening to residents and carefully considering various options, the committee is working towards creating vibrant, accessible spaces for everyone in Woodfin. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about these projects and share their thoughts as plans develop.
