Woodfin Town Council Meeting Recap: December 20, 2022
The Woodfin Town Council held its regular meeting on December 20, 2022, addressing a range of topics impacting the community. The meeting included introductions to new leadership, discussions on ongoing projects, and responses to resident concerns, ultimately resulting in several key decisions and outlining next steps for the town.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to approving routine items through a consent agenda, which included finalizing the 2023 meeting schedule – emphasizing budget work sessions – and planning a Town Council retreat for January 26th. Residents are encouraged to submit ideas for the retreat, ensuring a productive and forward-thinking session. The Council also approved a crucial contract with Anchor QEA for $95,950 to conduct a stormwater assessment, and approved a mid-year budget amendment that will allow for adjustments to fund various initiatives.
During the public comment period, residents voiced concerns about two prominent issues within Woodfin. Peggy Lyle brought to the Council's attention the dilapidated condition of the abandoned Chandler Lumber Company property on Merriman Avenue, highlighting its negative impact on neighborhood aesthetics and potential safety risks. Residents also expressed concerns about speeding and dangerous driving conditions, particularly along Sunny Ridge roads like Reckon Ridge. A resident from 33 Summit signed up to speak but ultimately chose not to address the Council. The Police Chief responded to concerns about traffic safety on Riverside Drive, outlining ongoing efforts including increased police presence and a willingness to collaborate with state authorities. He even offered to ride along with a council member to demonstrate the challenges firsthand.
The introduction of Buncombe County Schools Superintendent Dr. Rob Jackson was a highlight, with him emphasizing the importance of strong partnerships between schools and the town. He shared successes within the school system and pledged continued collaboration, reinforcing the commitment to ensuring all students graduate prepared for their future. The Town Manager’s report provided updates on various contracts, planning initiatives, and staffing changes, keeping the Council informed of ongoing town operations.
Looking ahead, several key action items were identified. Town Manager Shannon will investigate the Chandler Lumber Company property to explore potential solutions for addressing its condition. The Police Chief will continue working on traffic safety measures along Riverside Drive, and the Council is actively planning for a kickoff meeting of the town's comprehensive plan on January 17-19. The town will also continue pursuing grant opportunities for pedestrian improvements along Riverside Drive and a Greenway connection study, demonstrating the town’s commitment to improving infrastructure. Finally, the Town Manager will follow up with Woodfin Elementary School regarding their volunteer program to address communication delays.
This meeting underscored the Town Council's commitment to addressing community concerns, supporting local schools, and proactively planning for Woodfin’s future. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about these ongoing efforts and participate in upcoming meetings and events, including sharing ideas for the January 26th Town Council retreat.
