Woodfin's Parks & Greenways: A Recap of the December 14th PGAC Meeting

The Parks and Greenways Advisory Committee (PGAC) convened on December 14th, 2022, to discuss a range of initiatives aimed at improving Woodfin's parks and recreational spaces. The meeting, attended by committee members and interested stakeholders, centered on addressing vacancies within the PGAC itself, exploring potential grant funding opportunities, and outlining plans for key park redevelopment projects. This recap provides a clear overview of the discussions and decisions made, outlining what residents can expect moving forward.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to Silver Line Park, a focal point for revitalization efforts. The committee engaged in detailed discussions regarding demolition plans for existing structures and reviewed a proposal from Equinox outlining improvements including walkway resurfacing, landscaping upgrades, and a new sign structure. A particularly promising solution for the muddy area near the playground was proposed: utilizing Fox Edge bulbs with concrete pavers. While no formal votes were taken, a clear consensus emerged regarding the need for substantial improvements to Silver Line Park and a commitment was made to explore funding options to support these enhancements. Beyond Silver Line, the committee also considered potential repurposing options for Geneva Mania Park and discussed improvements to Roy Pope Park, including replacing mulch with a poured-in-place surface for enhanced accessibility and safety.

Beyond park-specific discussions, the PGAC explored several grant opportunities that could significantly benefit Woodfin's recreational infrastructure. These include funding for a feasibility study connecting the French Broad River Parkway to Weaverville, a walkability study focusing on the Riverside Drop Corridor, and a comprehensive bike plan for Woodfin. The committee also engaged in a discussion about the Great Trails State Coalition, considering whether to formally adopt a resolution supporting their statewide trail promotion initiatives. Finally, a proposal from Mountain True regarding the potential use of the Waste Pro site for an office was briefly discussed.

The meeting also featured a presentation from Maria of the National Fitness Campaign, showcasing their "Fitness Court of Community Wellness Program." This program involves installing outdoor gyms equipped with a variety of fitness equipment, designed to be accessible and provide free community-based workout options. The committee expressed considerable interest in exploring a partnership with the National Fitness Campaign, particularly considering potential locations like Silver Line Park and the Greenway. While no decisions were made regarding this partnership, it represents a promising avenue for expanding fitness opportunities within Woodfin.

Looking ahead, the PGAC will continue to evaluate these various options and gather further information. Residents can expect discussions regarding recommendations stemming from these explorations at future meetings. The committee is actively seeking replacements for two vacant member positions, so interested individuals are encouraged to contact the town. For those wanting to stay informed about the PGAC's progress, regular updates and meeting schedules can be found on the town website. The ongoing efforts of the PGAC demonstrate a commitment to enhancing Woodfin’s parks and greenways, creating more inclusive and accessible recreational opportunities for all residents.
