Woodfin Parks & Greenway Advisory Committee Meeting Recap – November 9, 2022
On November 9th, the Woodfin Parks & Greenway Advisory Committee (PGAC) convened to discuss a range of topics impacting our local parks, greenways, and recreational opportunities. The meeting focused on streamlining committee operations, prioritizing park improvements based on community feedback, and exploring future development possibilities. This recap highlights the key decisions made, discussions held, and what residents can expect moving forward.
A significant portion of the meeting centered around refining the PGAC's internal structure. Recognizing a need for greater clarity, the committee voted unanimously to approve an amendment eliminating alternate positions within the PGAC. This change aims to streamline decision-making and ensure a more focused approach to addressing park-related issues. Beyond internal changes, the committee engaged in detailed discussions regarding park assessments and prioritizing necessary improvements across various parks like Geneva Manie and Roy Pope. Members are now tasked with reviewing a detailed spreadsheet of these assessments, providing feedback on prioritization between now and December.
Community input played a crucial role in shaping the discussions. The PGAC reviewed results from recent surveys gauging resident preferences for park amenities. Pickleball emerged as the overwhelmingly popular choice, followed by a desire for a food truck court and expanded green space. Interestingly, survey results from a separate meeting regarding Greenway preferences showed different priorities – emphasizing outdoor gathering spaces and green space over food truck options. The committee also heard from the sole public attendee, Mike, who offered brief comments during the meeting.
Looking ahead, several key action items were identified that will directly impact our parks and greenways. The committee is exploring grant opportunities to support planning efforts for improved walking access throughout Woodfin, a project that will benefit residents of all ages. A dedicated committee will be formed to address wave-related issues and event planning, stemming from a report on the wave modeling project. Furthermore, discussions are underway regarding the potential repurposing of a former golf course property – currently brownfield land – for recreational use. Finally, the committee will consider supporting a resolution affirming the town's commitment to improving water quality, demonstrating a proactive approach to environmental stewardship.
Overall, the November 9th PGAC meeting demonstrated a commitment to responsive park management and community engagement. Residents can anticipate further discussions on Geneva Manie Park’s future, a potential survey among neighbors near the park to gauge their opinions on usage and improvements, and ongoing efforts to address maintenance needs and plan for future development. The PGAC encourages residents to stay informed about these initiatives and provide feedback as the planning process progresses.
