Woodfin Comprehensive Planning Process Moves Forward: Key Outcomes from April 18th Meeting

On April 18, 2022, the Woodfin Comprehensive Planning Committee convened virtually to discuss progress on the town's comprehensive planning process. The meeting, attended by steering committee members, focused heavily on analyzing recent survey results and charting a course for the plan's future direction. This recap summarizes key discussions, decisions, and next steps for Woodfin residents.

A significant portion of the meeting centered around a review of survey results, which garnered an impressive response from 672 residents and business owners – a strong indicator of community engagement. The survey revealed that approximately 80% of respondents feel a close connection to Woodfin, with many citing the "small town feel," access to outdoor recreation (particularly along the French Broad River), and proximity to Asheville as key motivators for living or working in Woodfin. Residents prioritized protecting natural resources, managing growth effectively, and improving transportation infrastructure, including pedestrian and bicycle-friendly options. Demographic data showed a balanced age range within the community, with significant representation from both younger and older residents.

Beyond reviewing data, the committee engaged in important discussions about Woodfin’s future. A notable debate arose regarding the concept of a traditional "town center." Ultimately, the committee favored exploring interconnected “activity centers” that leverage Woodfin’s unique assets like the riverfront and North Merriman Avenue. The committee also discussed defining distinct "character areas" within Woodfin to better reflect current and future land use. A proposed “Industrial” area along Silver Line was considered, alongside the need for clear definitions of "Reserved Lands" and "Parks and Open Space." Concerns were raised about the exclusion of mobile homes from housing data, prompting a commitment to address this in future planning considerations.

Recognizing the importance of inclusive community engagement, Linda provided an update on efforts to reach Woodfin’s Latino/Hispanic community. Initiatives include a Spanish-language survey, outreach through local churches (St. Eugene’s and Asheville Catholic), potential door-to-door efforts, and exploring partnerships with Woodfin Elementary School. The committee emphasized the importance of anonymizing individual survey comments to protect privacy and ensure confidentiality.

Key Decisions & Action Items Moving Forward:

  • Future Land Use Map: Gerald will now draft a future land use map incorporating the committee’s discussions and feedback.
  • Plan Draft Review: Committee members are encouraged to review the full survey results and provide feedback on draft plan introductions, background sections, and the proposed future land use map.
  • Continued Community Outreach: Efforts to engage with Woodfin’s Latino/Hispanic community will continue, ensuring diverse voices are heard throughout the planning process.
  • Next Steps: Gerald will schedule a follow-up meeting, potentially in person, to continue the discussion.

This comprehensive planning process aims to shape Woodfin’s future while preserving its unique character and addressing the priorities identified by residents. By actively participating in surveys, providing feedback on drafts, and engaging with community outreach efforts, Woodfin residents can play a vital role in shaping the town's long-term vision.
