Woodfin Board of Commissioners Meeting Recap – April 19, 2022

The Woodfin Board of Commissioners held a productive meeting on April 19, 2022, addressing several key issues impacting the town and its residents. The meeting began with a moment of silent prayer, demonstrating solidarity with those facing hardship in Ukraine and offering support to the Ukrainian people. Following approval of the agenda, the Board tackled a range of topics, ultimately making several important decisions and outlining future steps for Woodfin.

A significant portion of the meeting focused on policy updates and financial matters. The Board unanimously approved an amended non-discrimination policy, now explicitly including protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity. This move reflects the town's commitment to inclusivity and equity for all residents. Additionally, resolutions were approved supporting both the Opportunity Fund Investment – aimed at promoting equitable growth within Woodfin’s designated opportunity zones – and installment financing for new sanitation trucks, ensuring efficient waste management services. The Board also approved a policy governing the commercial use of park property and formally released revised minutes from a closed session held in April 2021, ensuring transparency and accuracy. Finally, recognizing the importance of community resources, the Board approved a $25,000 budget amendment to support Woodfin Elementary School’s playground initiative.

Discussions also centered on key town operations and future planning. The ABC Board presented its monthly report, noting a slight decrease in sales but expressing optimism with the upcoming opening of a new brewery. They are currently seeking applications for a new board member, particularly individuals with legal or accounting expertise. The Police Chief provided an update on crime statistics, highlighting a decrease in calls for service and crashes, and praised the success of recent DWI enforcement efforts. The Planning & Zoning Committee shared progress on developing a comprehensive plan, emphasizing their commitment to engaging all segments of the community, including underrepresented populations. The Finance Director reported on Woodfin’s strong financial standing, exceeding revenue projections and maintaining a healthy fund balance. A lease agreement for the Silver property to provide overflow parking at French Broad River Academy was also approved, addressing a growing need for convenient parking options.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, discussions arose regarding the accuracy of closed session minutes and concerns about safety and accessibility related to potential pickleball courts. Following a recommendation from the Parks & Greenways Advisory Committee, the Board received information on initiating a pilot program for temporary pickleball courts at Geneva Maney Park and the Woodfin Community Center. While no formal vote was taken, this proposal will be further considered as part of the pilot program implementation.

Looking ahead, several key action items were identified. The town is actively seeking applications for the open position on the ABC Board, encouraging qualified residents to apply. The Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee will continue its community engagement efforts and refine the plan, prioritizing outreach to underrepresented groups. Preparations are underway for the Woodfin 5K on April 30th, and town officials will continue to address staffing challenges within the Police Department. These ongoing efforts demonstrate Woodfin’s commitment to responsible governance, community well-being, and a vibrant future for all residents.
