Woodfin Parks & Recreation: Update on Equinox Park and Future Planning
The Parks, Greenway & Arts Committee (PGAC) held a meeting on November 10, 2021, focusing primarily on the ongoing development of Equinox Park (formerly Woodfin Park) and broader discussions about the future of Woodfin’s parks system. The meeting provided valuable updates for residents interested in these important community projects.
A major focus was the presentation of a 30% site plan for "Wave," a key feature planned for Equinox Park. Presented by Riley Adams from S2O, the plan incorporates feedback received in previous meetings and includes several notable improvements. These include an optimized parking layout under the bridge, expanded green space in the upper plaza, a dedicated play area, adjustments to the greenway path, and improved river access with a concrete ramp. Critically, the design also incorporates sustainable stormwater management features like constructed wetlands and a dry creek bed. The committee unanimously approved this 30% design, signaling progress toward the park’s development, which is currently anticipated to begin after the Bat Moratorium in 2023. S2O will continue design work, presenting updated plans at the 60%, 90/95% stages before final approval by the Board of Commissioners.
Beyond the Wave project, a significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to discussing potential additions to Equinox Park. A pavilion proved to be a particularly lively topic, with strong community support expressed but concerns raised regarding cost and potential tree removal. The committee decided to postpone a final decision on the pavilion until December/January when detailed cost estimates are available. Other discussions included concerns about the boat ramp's design and potential conflicts with train operations, highlighting a commitment to ensuring safe and efficient park usage.
Community input was actively solicited throughout the meeting, with committee members carefully considering citizen feedback on various design elements. The committee acknowledged and emphasized a commitment to minimizing environmental impact, particularly regarding tree preservation. Recognizing the importance of connecting residents with Woodfin’s history, a discussion was initiated regarding incorporating historical research into park signage and storytelling for both Equinox and Silver Line Parks.
Looking ahead, several key action items were identified. S2O will share an electronic repository (likely Dropbox or OneDrive) containing the 30% design documents. Committee members will individually consider community feedback and cost implications related to the pavilion, informing their recommendations when cost estimates become available. A crucial next step is the development of a comprehensive Parks & Recreation business plan, spearheaded by the PM (Project Management) subcommittee. This plan will focus on operational needs and future programming, ensuring Woodfin’s parks are well-managed and continue to provide valuable recreational opportunities for residents.
This meeting underscored the PGAC’s dedication to creating high-quality parks in Woodfin, balancing design considerations with community input and a focus on long-term sustainability. Residents can expect further updates as the Wave project progresses, and the development of a comprehensive business plan will shape the future direction of Woodfin’s parks system.
