Woodfin Board of Commissioners Meeting Recap: December 21, 2021

The Woodfin Board of Commissioners held a productive meeting on December 21, 2021, marking the beginning of new terms for Commissioners Erik Edgerton and Jim McAlister. The meeting included a moment of remembrance for those lost during the year, acknowledging recent tragedies impacting communities near and far. Following a formal swearing-in ceremony presided over by Judge Allen Thornburg, the Board elected Ronnie Lunsford as Mayor Pro Tem, a role he will hold for the coming year.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to ongoing projects impacting Woodfin residents. The Board unanimously approved proceeding with the 60% design phase of the highly anticipated Riverside Park and Whitewater Wave project, a development driven by extensive community input. David Tuck from Equinox Environmental presented an update outlining the project's design, which includes a parking area, pavilion, natural play areas, and improved river access, all while minimizing environmental impact. Residents can expect construction to begin in approximately a year and a half. The Board also approved a petition accepting several private streets within the Olivet Subdivision into the municipal street system, ensuring these roads become part of Woodfin’s official infrastructure. However, bridges within the subdivision will be addressed at a later date.

During public comment, Mark Hunt passionately advocated for continued support of the Woodfin Greenway and Blueway Project, emphasizing its strong community backing and progress to date. His remarks underscored the importance of maintaining political momentum for this ambitious initiative. The Board also discussed a proposed Street Paving Project, which aims to resurface 26 residential streets identified as being in need of repair. Thomas Bonino from McGill Associates outlined a plan with an estimated cost of $2.5 million (with a potential cap of $3 million), utilizing Powell Bill funds and potentially securing a bank loan. The town will also explore federal funding opportunities to further support street maintenance efforts.

What's Next for Woodfin?

Several key action items emerged from the meeting, impacting residents in tangible ways. Town staff will continue working on developing plans for the Riverside Park and Whitewater Wave project, moving into the 60% design phase. They will also pursue federal funding options for street maintenance and seek guidance from the School of Government regarding Powell Bill funds. Finally, once bids are received for the Street Paving Project, the Board will review a contract to award. Residents can stay informed about these developments and access official documents on the town’s website. The Board will also follow up with the ABC Board to obtain their monthly report, ensuring transparency and accountability in local governance.

This meeting demonstrated the Board’s commitment to addressing key infrastructure needs, responding to community feedback, and pursuing opportunities for improvement within Woodfin.
