Woodfin Parks, Greenways & Arts Committee Meeting Recap: December 8, 2021

The Woodfin Parks, Greenways & Arts Committee (PGAC) held a productive meeting on December 8th, focusing on key initiatives to enhance Woodfin’s parks and recreational offerings. The meeting included updates from various subcommittees, discussions on branding, funding opportunities, and plans for future park development. A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to laying groundwork for both immediate improvements and long-term strategic planning.

A major highlight of the meeting was the unveiling of the new Woodfin Parks and Recreation logo, developed in collaboration with Curve Theory. After a six-week process incorporating community feedback, the committee members were enthusiastic about the final design, praising its visual appeal and representation of Woodfin's community spirit. While no formal vote was taken, the committee strongly indicated their intention to recommend the logo to the Town Board for final approval. This new branding is expected to enhance Woodfin’s image and foster community pride.

Beyond the logo, discussions centered on several crucial areas impacting Woodfin’s parks and recreation system. The Parks & Recreation business plan, spearheaded by the PM subcommittee, is progressing well with valuable insights gained from discussions with Grand Rapids, Michigan's Parks Department. The committee also addressed concerns regarding the growing presence of outfitters in Woodfin parks, particularly Riverside Park. A plan was initiated to explore options for formalizing these relationships, potentially through a Request for Proposals (RFP) outlining expectations and guidelines. Further discussion revolved around optimizing shelter usage, including a potential relocation of a shelter from Riverside Park to Silver Line Park.

Funding for the Greenway project was another key topic, with Luke Williams providing an update on ongoing conversations with Riverlink and exploring potential opportunities through state trails projects. Recognizing the importance of preserving Woodfin's history, a discussion was initiated about engaging a local historian to document the town’s parks and recreation legacy, potentially leading to informative signage. Finally, Luke Williams provided an update on the Silver Line Park 30% design, noting adjustments made to accommodate floodplain requirements and ongoing efforts to secure necessary land access.

There were no public comments received during the meeting, but the committee's discussions reflect a strong commitment to engaging with residents and ensuring their needs are met.

What's Next? Several key action items emerged from the meeting, impacting residents directly:

  • Logo Approval Process: Luke and Eric will coordinate with the Town Board to formally recommend the new logo for adoption.
  • Parks & Recreation Business Plan: The PM subcommittee will continue refining the business plan, aiming for completion by Spring 2022.
  • Outfitters Relationship: The committee will develop a formal plan for managing relationships with outfitters, potentially generating revenue and establishing clear usage guidelines.
  • Historical Documentation: Walt will investigate options for involving a local historian to document Woodfin's parks and recreation history.
  • Greenway Funding: Luke will continue pursuing funding opportunities through state trails projects and other grant programs.

The PGAC’s ongoing efforts demonstrate a dedication to building a vibrant and accessible parks and recreation system for Woodfin. Residents can expect further updates on these initiatives in upcoming meetings, as the committee works to implement its strategic plans and enhance the quality of life for all Woodfin residents.
