Woodfin Board of Commissioners Meeting Recap: October 19, 2021

The Woodfin Board of Commissioners convened on Tuesday, October 19th for their regular meeting. The agenda included a variety of important topics impacting the community, from public safety to economic development and future planning. A key moment in the meeting was the unanimous appointment of Teresa Stoker to fill the vacancy left by Commissioner Don Hunnicutt, who was recognized for his 22 years of service (the formal recognition will be postponed). Stoker was subsequently sworn in, bringing a fresh perspective to the board.

Several significant decisions were made during the meeting. The Board unanimously approved the Buncombe-Madison Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan, a crucial step in preparing for potential threats to our region. They also approved the current employee health insurance plan and a new Flexible Spending Account (FSA) option for town employees, demonstrating the Board's commitment to supporting its workforce. A welcome announcement came regarding a grant awarded to the Woodfin Police Department for bulletproof vests, enhancing officer safety. However, two rezoning decisions concerning properties on Elk Mountain Road and Blueberry Hill Road were tabled pending written feedback from the Planning & Zoning Board, indicating a desire for thorough consideration of these potentially impactful developments.

Community voices were heard during the public comment period. Jay Grimmett raised concerns about pedestrian safety on Jonestown Road, particularly with increased traffic around Silver Lion Park. He requested the Board explore options for sidewalks to improve safety for walkers. John Warren addressed a proposed storage facility on Blueberry Hill Road, expressing concerns about its potential impact on the surrounding neighborhood. These comments highlighted a recurring theme: residents are actively engaged in shaping their community and voicing concerns about development projects.

The Board also received an update on the "Harry Potter-themed" cottage cluster development in Mountain Village, hearing about progress and construction plans including the installation of a cofferdam to protect waterways. Finally, the ABC reported positive financial trends and noted the opening of new businesses, signaling a return to normalcy and potential economic growth for Woodfin.

Looking ahead, residents can expect the Board to investigate options for sidewalks on Jonestown Road in response to Mr. Grimmett’s concerns, and will review feedback from the Planning & Zoning board regarding the pending rezoning decisions. Citizens are also encouraged to visit Silver Lion Park and experience its ongoing development. The Board emphasized the importance of collaboration with residents, and a commitment to improved communication regarding town initiatives – particularly those related to zoning and development. This meeting underscored the Board’s focus on balancing growth, community safety, and resident input to ensure a thriving future for Woodfin.
