Parks, Greenway & Advisory Committee Meeting Recap: Setting the Stage for a More Focused Future
On May 25, 2021, the Parks, Greenway & Advisory Committee (PGAC) convened to discuss ongoing projects and refine its operational approach. The meeting, attended by committee members, focused on clarifying the committee’s role and improving communication to better serve Woodfin residents. This recap highlights key decisions, discussions, and next steps for those interested in the future of our parks and greenways.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to defining the scope of work for both the PGAC and its subcommittees. Recognizing a need for greater clarity, committee members agreed that Eric and Adrian will draft a document outlining exactly what the PGAC will and won’t do. This aims to prevent "scope creep" – the tendency for projects and responsibilities to expand beyond their original intent – ensuring the committee operates efficiently and effectively. This is a crucial step towards streamlining decision-making and maximizing impact for our community’s parks and greenways.
Beyond defining roles, the PGAC discussed improving communication both internally and externally. The Communications subcommittee is developing a strategy to enhance how the town communicates about parks and greenway initiatives, following Rose Keys’ departure. A key point raised was the importance of sharing subcommittee meeting notes with the full committee beforehand, allowing for questions and broader input. The committee also acknowledged the need to address operational issues within parks, particularly safety concerns like steps at Riverside Park. To that end, they agreed to explore the creation of a task force, potentially utilizing alternate committee members, to tackle these issues and improve park safety.
Several project updates were provided, including progress on the Silver Line Park construction, ongoing development of Riverside Park/Whitewater Wave (incorporating feedback from a recent public forum), and efforts to secure grant funding for various park projects. A staffing change at Riverlink was also noted, which will impact project coordination and requires careful attention to ensure a smooth transition. The committee briefly touched on the town’s naming rights policy, recognizing its importance for fundraising efforts that support our parks. Finally, a plan was approved to organize committee files on Google Drive for improved accessibility and efficiency.
Key Decisions & What's Next:
- The minutes from the April 27th meeting were approved with a minor correction.
- The committee agreed to explore the creation of a task force to address operational and programming concerns.
- The next full committee meeting will be held in July, providing time for subcommittee work to progress.
Action Items for Residents to Watch:
- Eric and Adrian will draft a scope of work document. Keep an eye out for this important clarification of the PGAC's responsibilities.
- Walt Brewer (Chairman) will attend monthly construction meetings at Silver Line Park and report back. This ensures transparency regarding the park's development.
- Coral & Chris (Communications Subcommittee) will continue developing a communication strategy. Expect to see updates on how the town is sharing information about our parks and greenways.
- Adrian will lead the effort to establish a structured file system on Google Drive. This improvement should make information about park projects more readily available.
The PGAC meeting demonstrated a commitment to improving the committee's effectiveness and ensuring that our parks and greenways continue to thrive. By clarifying roles, streamlining communication, and addressing operational challenges, the PGAC is laying the groundwork for a more vibrant and accessible park system for all Woodfin residents.
