Strategic Partnership Grants Committee Meeting Recap – February 5, 2026

On February 5, 2026, the Strategic Partnership Grants Committee convened to discuss ongoing grant programs and plan for upcoming funding opportunities in Fiscal Year 27. The meeting, attended by committee members, focused on reviewing current applicants, refining the grant scoring process, and ensuring equitable distribution of funds across Buncombe County.

A key element of the meeting was a review of applications for new partnerships within the program. Currently, there are three applicants vying for just two available spots, leading to interviews scheduled by the Board of Commissioners on February 12th. The committee noted that all applicants are white and reside in either Candler or Asheville, prompting discussion about broadening outreach efforts to attract a more diverse pool of candidates in future cycles.

The majority of the meeting centered on planning for Fiscal Year 27’s grant funding process. Staff presented two potential funding options: grants up to $10,000 for smaller, one-time projects (Option 1) and grants up to $85,000 for more substantial programs or projects (Option 2). A lively discussion ensued about how to best balance these two options, ensuring a variety of projects are supported while maintaining a focus on quality. Given the high volume of applications expected (73 last year, 78 the year before), with many draft applications already submitted, committee members emphasized prioritizing high-quality proposals. The existing grant scoring tool will be distributed to the committee for review, and staff will provide individual orientations to new members unfamiliar with the process.

Recognizing the importance of supporting community-led initiatives, discussions highlighted grassroots efforts like those surrounding the Blessing Barn. The committee also emphasized the need to consider geographic diversity in grant awards, ensuring funding reaches all areas of Buncombe County. A specific priority was identified for projects related to Helene restoration, with an adjustment planned for the scoring tool to reflect this focus. Staff will also gather information on existing county funding for restoration projects, providing a more complete picture of available resources.

While no formal votes were taken during the meeting, several key action items emerged. Applicants must submit their grant applications by February 20th. The Board of Commissioners will announce appointments on February 17th. Recognizing the potential workload, the committee may consider a special meeting during the week of February 23rd to discuss applicant review and assignment strategies. The next full committee meeting is scheduled for March 5, 2026.

This upcoming funding cycle promises to be competitive, and the committee’s focus on quality, geographic diversity, and community knowledge will be crucial in ensuring that grant funding effectively addresses the evolving needs of Buncombe County residents. Residents are encouraged to review the scoring tool when it is distributed and consider submitting grant applications by February 20th.
