Event RecapOn April 21, 2025, the Burke County Board of Commissioners convened for their regular meeting, addressing a wide range of issues impacting residents. The meeting, which adjourned at approximately 1:30 AM after a lengthy session, covered zoning matters, financial considerations for emergency services, and heard valuable input from community members. All commissioners were present, and the meeting began with standard formalities including an invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to zoning requests. The Board approved two rezoning applications: one for a parcel on NC-18 South (ZMA 20-25-01) allowing a business to operate, and another for a property on Ashton Drive (ZMA 2025-02) enabling Evans Construction to expand operations. The Ashton Drive rezoning included a requirement for a buffer zone, demonstrating the Board's commitment to balancing business development with residential quality of life. A petition from neighbors supporting Evans Construction’s rezoning was presented, further illustrating community support for the project.
A major point of discussion revolved around Salem Fire and Rescue’s request for a fire tax increase to fund the purchase of a new fire truck and building expansion. Chief Offer presented a compelling case, highlighting aging equipment, increased call volume, and the importance of maintaining a high ISO rating for fire protection. While Commissioners acknowledged the critical need to support emergency services, concerns were raised regarding the potential financial burden on residents. No immediate decision was made, but this topic will be revisited in future discussions, signaling an ongoing debate about balancing community safety with fiscal responsibility.
The meeting also included a public comment period where residents voiced their concerns and perspectives. Kelly and Amy Pearson, representing Guardian ad Litem services, advocated for increased investment in mental health resources and prioritized care for children within the county's social services system, highlighting a critical need in Burke County. Terry Swanson addressed the deteriorating condition of Valley Trail and Willie Ray Road, requesting action to improve road conditions. These comments underscored the diverse needs of Burke County residents and provided valuable insights for the Board's consideration.
Beyond these key discussions, the Board unanimously approved a comprehensive consent agenda which included approving minutes from previous meetings, recognizing National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and Cruelty to Animals Prevention Month, amending the Board’s rules of procedure (now including reporting requirements for key county officials), accepting state grant funding, and approving budget adjustments related to various initiatives including economic development, stream mitigation, ARPA funds, and animal services.
Looking ahead, the Board will continue discussions regarding Salem Fire and Rescue’s proposed tax increase. County staff have been tasked with exploring options to address the concerns about Valley Trail and Willie Ray Road, and will also continue managing and allocating ARPA funds to meet community needs. The Board will review and potentially revise the county’s rules of procedure, incorporating feedback received during this meeting. Residents can expect further updates on these matters in upcoming Board meetings and are encouraged to participate in the ongoing dialogue.
