Burke County Board of Commissioners Meeting Recap: June 16, 2025

On June 16th, the Burke County Board of Commissioners convened for their regular meeting, addressing key issues impacting our community. All commissioners (except Commissioner Smith) were present, and the meeting included a moment of reflection led by Reverend Alicia Connelly and a patriotic opening from Jay Iverson-Riddell Developmental Center resident. Here's a breakdown of what you need to know:

A Focus on Finances and the Future: The most significant outcome of the meeting was the unanimous approval of the Fiscal Year 2025-26 budget. This means a continued focus on strengthening our local economy, addressing housing needs, and improving government efficiency. Importantly, the Board approved a slight reduction in the property tax rate (1.96%), putting more money back into your pockets. The savings achieved through a lean budget approach will be reinvested in crucial areas like workforce development and strategic initiatives, ensuring Burke County remains a thriving place to live and work. The Board also approved continued support for Meals on Wheels, responding to a growing need within our community.

Recognizing Community Heroes: The Board took time to honor dedicated volunteers through the Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards. Congratulations to Doug White, Jasper Hemphill, Joyce Petit, Julie Dickinson, Salem United Methodist Church, and the George Hildebrand Fire & Rescue Department for their outstanding contributions to Burke County. The 55th anniversary recognition of the George Hildebrand Fire & Rescue Department was a particularly touching moment, highlighting their vital role in keeping our community safe.

Addressing Foster Care Needs: A presentation from "One More, One Less" brought to light the challenges facing foster families and children in Burke County. The organization works to connect churches with these needs, and the Board expressed interest in exploring partnerships to provide greater support. This is a critical conversation about how we can better care for vulnerable members of our community, and the Board will continue to explore options.

What's Next for Burke County? Several key action items emerged from the meeting, shaping what we can expect in the coming months. The Board reaffirmed its commitment to economic development, particularly through initiatives like a speculative class A industrial shell building. They also approved funding for a new Citizens Academy, aimed at increasing citizen engagement in county government – an exciting opportunity to learn more about how our local government works and get involved. Finally, the Board is committed to streamlining land use regulations to encourage development and housing, which will be a key focus for the coming year.

Important Dates & Reminders: Please note that county offices will be closed on July 4th in observance of Independence Day. The Board also decided to postpone a decision regarding the resolution supporting substantial equivalency until their July meeting, and deferred funding decisions for BDI and VEDIC to the next meeting.

This meeting demonstrated a commitment from our Board of Commissioners to responsible fiscal management, strategic planning, and supporting the well-being of all Burke County residents. By focusing on economic development, addressing social service needs, and encouraging citizen involvement, the Board is laying a foundation for a strong and vibrant future.
