City Council Kicks Off New Term with Focus on Community and Recovery

The Asheville City Council held its annual Organizational Meeting on December 2, 2024, formally marking the start of a new term and setting the stage for upcoming challenges. The meeting, attended by Mayor Manheimer and council members Kim Roney, Sage Turner, Roberto Luis Hess (newly elected), and S. Antanette Mosley (newly elected Vice Mayor), primarily centered around ceremonial proceedings, recognizing departing leadership, and electing key roles. While no significant policy decisions were made during this organizational session, the tone of the meeting underscored a commitment to community care and addressing the ongoing recovery from recent storm damage.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to honoring Sandra Kilgore, who concluded her nine years of service on the council. Mayor Manheimer delivered a heartfelt tribute acknowledging Kilgore’s dedication to safe and affordable housing, diverse representation on boards and commissions, and her genuine care for the Asheville community. The council formally presented Kilgore with a resolution of appreciation, a nameplate, and a plaque in recognition of her contributions. Kilgore, in turn, emphasized the importance of connection and listening to community members, encouraging the new council to lead with courage, wisdom, and humility during what she acknowledged were challenging times.

Following the recognition of Kilgore, a key decision was made: Antoinette Mosley was unanimously elected as the new Vice Mayor. Shanika Funderburk nominated Mosley, and the nomination was seconded without objection. Mosley accepted the nomination, solidifying her role in assisting Mayor Manheimer with council duties. Notably, Vice Mayor Mosley will cover the Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast in January as Mayor Manheimer will be attending a conference in Washington D.C.

New council members Hess, Roney, and Turner were also formally sworn in and offered brief remarks. Council member Hess expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, specifically thanking Asheville Water Department workers who worked tirelessly during the recent hurricane. Turner echoed appreciation for the community’s resilience, while Roney emphasized the importance of disaster management experience as the city navigates ongoing recovery efforts. A recurring theme throughout the meeting, particularly during Kilgore’s remarks, was a focus on genuine care and connection with the community.

While there were no formal public comments during this organizational meeting, the discussions highlighted a clear focus on addressing the challenges facing Asheville. The council will convene a work session next week to begin long-term recovery planning following the recent storm, signaling an immediate focus on addressing ongoing needs.
