Buncombe County Schools Board of Education Meeting Recap - June 6, 2024
The Buncombe County Schools Board of Education held a comprehensive meeting on June 6, 2024, addressing a wide range of topics from student and staff recognition to significant policy discussions and ongoing studies. The meeting, attended by board members, Superintendent Dr. Judson Jackson, and numerous community members, showcased both celebratory achievements within the school system and areas of concern requiring further attention.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to recognizing outstanding achievements across Buncombe County Schools. The board celebrated numerous athletic victories, including eight middle school and eleven high school conference championships, culminating in state championship titles for Owen High School (track & field), North Buncombe High School (relay teams), and Roberson High School (baseball – securing their second consecutive NCHSAA 4A state championship). Beyond athletics, the board also acknowledged excellence in the arts and academics, recognizing individuals like Jenny Lanier (band), Christopher Lavignette (band), Lakeisha Lee (courageous leadership), Tenzin Hartshorn (math), and Lee Armistead (Media Coordinator of the Year). The honoring of Martha Talent from Enka Middle School as Teacher of the Year further highlighted the dedication and talent within the district.
Beyond celebrations, a key focus was on the ongoing Consolidation Feasibility Study mandated by the North Carolina General Assembly. Rachel Sawyer, Director of Strategic Partnerships, provided an update on this study, which will assess the potential merger between Buncombe County Schools and Asheville City Schools. The study emphasizes community engagement, utilizing public meetings, focus groups, surveys, and an online forum to gather input. Prismatic Services has been selected as the vendor conducting the study, with a final report due December 31st and recommendations to be presented to the General Assembly by February 15th. This study has significant implications for the future structure and governance of schools in Buncombe County, making community involvement crucial.
Public comment provided a platform for residents to voice their concerns and perspectives. Several speakers raised serious issues, including the need for increased support for students with autism, particularly addressing concerns about regression. A deeply emotional segment of the meeting involved a citizen speaking about the recent tragic suicides of two young girls, alleging a cover-up by the school board. Finally, numerous speakers voiced concerns regarding proposed changes to Title IX and their potential impact on student safety, parental rights, and free speech. These concerns underscored a desire for greater transparency and responsiveness from the board regarding student well-being and evolving legal landscapes.
The Board took several key actions during the meeting, including approving summer school contracts and SD’s PEP additions and renovations. A notable decision was the board's vote to join a multi-district lawsuit against social media companies, responding to a survey indicating strong support from parents and staff. Glenda Weinert was also selected to fill the vacant at-large board seat, ensuring full representation on the Board. Finally, a comprehensive consent agenda was approved, encompassing financial reports and various program approvals.
