Water Department Updates: A Recap for Asheville Residents (December 11, 2024)
On December 11, 2024, the County Briefing held a meeting focused on updates from the Water Department regarding the distribution and handling of lead test kits for Asheville residents. This briefing provided details on a newly implemented system designed to streamline the process of getting completed test kits to laboratories, ultimately shortening the time residents wait for results. While no formal votes or decisions were taken during this session, the presentation outlined a system already approved and now being put into action.
The primary focus of the briefing was detailing this new system, which involves a collaborative effort between various entities. The Water Department is partnering with Sullivan Land Services to provide personnel at library locations and the Asheville Fire Department for logistical support. Residents who have already requested lead test kits will soon experience a more efficient pickup and processing system, designed to significantly reduce the current four-to-six week timeframe for receiving test results.
For residents who have already requested a lead test kit, the new system will begin on December 12th. You can expect to receive an AVL alert the day before your scheduled pickup, informing you of the designated location. Kits will be available for pickup at four convenient locations: Asheville City Hall (70 Court Plaza), North Asheville Library, East Asheville Library, and West Asheville Library. Pickup hours at City Hall are Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with designated parking spots available. Library hours will vary by location, so check the Asheville Public Library website for specific details. Please note that this system is only for residents who have already submitted a request; those wishing to participate can still do so by calling 828-259-5962 or emailing [email protected].
Key dates to remember include December 19th, the last day for kit pickup, and December 21st, the final date for dropping off completed kits. The Water Department emphasized that this updated system is a direct response to community needs and aims to provide residents with faster, more accessible lead testing services. This initiative underscores the city's commitment to ensuring safe drinking water for all Asheville residents.
