Debris Removal Update: Asheville County Briefing Recap - November 13, 2024

On November 13, 2024, a County Briefing was held to provide an update on storm debris removal efforts following recent storms impacting Asheville. The briefing, presented by city officials, focused primarily on outlining the current status of collection and management operations, rather than making formal decisions or taking votes. The session was intended to inform the public about ongoing progress and clarify expectations for residents and businesses.

The primary focus of the briefing was a detailed overview of how contracted debris removal crews are working to clear storm-related materials from the city. Crews are dividing Asheville into operational zones and strategically allocating resources – specifically, a fleet of 27 trucks – to each zone. A significant portion of the effort is currently concentrated on clearing public rights-of-way, ensuring roadways and sidewalks are accessible. Importantly, the cleanup will also extend to city parks, addressing debris accumulated in these public spaces. Alongside this, the City of Asheville Public Works team is actively identifying and removing hazardous trees that pose a risk to public safety due to storm damage.

As of November 11th, the contracted company has collected an impressive 56,000 cubic yards of debris – equivalent to over 1,100 truckloads. The current allocation of trucks across zones reflects the areas with the greatest need, with Zone 3 receiving a higher concentration (6 trucks) and Zones 4 & 5 utilizing 8. This targeted approach aims to efficiently address the most heavily impacted areas while ensuring all parts of Asheville are eventually cleared.

The briefing reinforced that residents and businesses play a crucial role in the cleanup process. They are strongly encouraged to continue sorting storm debris appropriately and placing it at the curb for collection by the contracted crews. The contractor will continue rotating through different areas of the city, prioritizing zones with high concentrations of debris but working systematically to address all affected locations. The Public Works team will continue their essential work removing hazardous trees from public rights-of-way, ensuring the safety of residents and commuters.

This update provides a clear picture of the ongoing efforts to restore Asheville following recent storms. While no formal decisions were made during this briefing, it highlighted the significant progress already achieved and outlined the continued steps necessary for a complete cleanup. Residents can expect to see crews continuing their work throughout the city, and their cooperation in sorting debris remains vital to ensuring a swift and effective recovery.
