Public Art and Cultural Commission Meeting Recap – August 15, 2024
The Public Art and Cultural Commission convened on August 15, 2024, to discuss ongoing projects, upcoming events, and ways to improve collaboration within the city government. This commission advises Asheville City Council on matters related to public art and cultural spaces, ensuring a vibrant and accessible arts scene for our community. The meeting was attended by various commission members, staff from the Community and Regional Entertainment Facilities Department (CREF), and interested community members.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to reviewing and approving upcoming events for the year ahead, presented by John Fillman from CREF. After careful consideration, the commission approved a schedule that includes the Goombay Festival over a particular weekend (chosen instead of the Symphony), and a performance by the Symphony Orchestra over Labor Day Weekend. Several new events were also greenlit, including Asheville Feast (a culinary arts event) and a Sunrise Service at Pack Square Park. The commission was also briefed on potential transit impacts related to South Pack Square, highlighting the need for careful planning and coordination. CREF aims to streamline the event date request process in the coming year, allowing for earlier planning and better coordination.
Beyond event scheduling, discussions centered on improving the efficiency and synergy of Asheville's various boards and commissions. Staff members Pete Perez, Carly Miller, and others reported on their attendance at the Summer Leadership Summit, where they explored ways to collaborate more effectively across different commissions and standardize processes like bylaws and interactions with City Council. The city is also planning a broader review of its board and commission structure, seeking community input to ensure these bodies are effectively serving the needs of Asheville. Several working groups provided updates, including the Urban Trail Working Group (focused on policies and marketing for the urban trail), the Artist Selection Panel (which selected Rachel David with Red Metal for the Art Deco Masterpiece project at the S&W building), and the Inventory & Maintenance group (working to streamline processes).
Community input was provided by Christopher from Story Parlor/Magnify YouTube Channel, who shared exciting news about the Flatiron Statue gaining international recognition through their educational YouTube channel. The video has garnered significant views, sparking increased interest in Asheville’s public art – a testament to the power of digital storytelling and its ability to connect our city with a wider audience.
Key Decisions & Actions: The commission approved the minutes from previous meetings and formally recommended moving forward with Rachel David's concept for the Art Deco Masterpiece. Several action items were identified, including scheduling regular meetings for the Urban Trail Working Group and refining the process for selecting a representative from a higher education institution. The commission also committed to sharing Christopher’s Magnify video content to promote Asheville's public art and encouraged local artists and organizations to apply for various grant opportunities offered through ArtsAVL.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for September 19th at 4 PM in the same location. Due to Pete Perez’s absence, Steph will be staffing the meeting. This meeting underscored a commitment to collaboration, strategic planning for future cultural initiatives, and celebrating the impact of existing projects. Residents are encouraged to explore ArtsAVL’s grant opportunities and stay informed about upcoming events that shape Asheville's vibrant cultural landscape.
