Burke County Board of Commissioners Meeting Recap: June 18, 2024

The Burke County Board of Commissioners held a productive regular meeting on June 18, 2024, addressing key financial and development matters impacting the community. All commissioners were present, and the meeting included recognition of local volunteers, updates from county departments, and several significant votes.

Significant Decisions & Financial Planning: A major highlight of the meeting was the unanimous approval of the Fiscal Year 2024-2025 budget. This signifies a commitment to responsible fiscal management, with the Board maintaining a low property tax rate (56 cents), currently ranked 28th lowest in North Carolina. The budget prioritizes investments in vital areas like public safety (sheriff’s department and fire departments), education (supporting Burke County Public Schools with increased funding), and senior services. Furthermore, the budget aims to ensure the self-sustainability of both the solid waste and water/sewer funds, reducing pressure on the general fund.

Development & Infrastructure Updates: The Board also approved a rezoning request for 2.11 acres on Drexel Road, paving the way for Settlemyer's Nursery to establish operations. A design-build contract was approved with Beam Construction for the courthouse renovation project, funded through grants. This project will improve space utilization and infrastructure within the courthouse. Additionally, they approved a plan for Paddy Creek Trail Easement with Duke Energy, furthering recreational opportunities in the county.

Recognizing Community Contributions & Addressing Concerns: The meeting included a heartwarming recognition of outstanding volunteers across Burke County, with Sonia Reed receiving the prestigious Governor’s Medallion Award. During public comments, Carla Kincaid emphasized the importance of celebrating Juneteenth and shared a poignant story about civil rights activist Opal Lee. Commissioner Perkins highlighted the importance of supporting local emergency services, and Commissioner Gardner raised concerns about potential impacts of pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) legislation on local pharmacies.

What’s Next? County staff will now focus on implementing the approved budget and capital improvement plans. The American 250 committee will continue its work, supported by grant funding. Citizens are encouraged to get involved in county boards and committees – a list of opportunities can be found on the Burke County website at www.burkenc.org.

Why This Matters to You: The decisions made at this meeting directly impact the financial health of Burke County, the quality of public services you receive (from law enforcement to education), and opportunities for recreation and economic development within our community. The Board’s commitment to fiscal responsibility, combined with investments in key areas like public safety and education, aims to ensure a thriving future for all Burke County residents.
