Woodfin Town Council Meeting Recap: March 17, 2026 – Progress on Greenway, Affordable Housing Approved

The Woodfin Town Council held a productive meeting on March 17th, addressing several key issues impacting the community. The session included recognition of local law enforcement, updates on ongoing projects, and a significant decision regarding affordable housing. This recap provides an overview of the meeting's key outcomes and what they mean for Woodfin residents.

A major focus of the evening was the ongoing Woodfin Greenway and Blueway project, presented by Allison Daines from Buncombe County Parks & Recreation. The ambitious initiative aims to enhance transportation, preserve natural resources along our waterways, and boost the local economy by providing recreational opportunities. Currently, work is underway on segments along Highway 251 and Beaver Dam Creek, funded through a combination of local, county, and state resources. Residents can expect to see progress continue over the coming years, with some sections potentially completed as early as 2029. Keep an eye on Buncombe County Parks & Recreation for updates and progress reports as the project moves forward.

Beyond the Greenway, the Council unanimously approved a conditional rezoning request from Greenway Residential Housing for a 60-unit multifamily housing complex on Weaverville Road. This development will be entirely dedicated to providing affordable housing for residents aged 55 and older, addressing a critical need within Woodfin. A minor variance was granted to allow for a slightly taller building with a distinctive hip-style roof design. The Council’s support demonstrates their commitment to ensuring housing opportunities for all residents, and the project is expected to contribute positively to the community.

The meeting also included a brief but important moment of recognition for Police Chief Jackie Boykin, who was formally welcomed to the role. Chief Boykin highlighted the department's focus on community engagement and proactive policing, emphasizing the importance of competency within the force as demonstrated by Officer Matt Murray's recent achievement in attaining his intermediate police certification. Finally, the Council approved joining the Asheville Regional Housing Consortium, a collaborative effort to address regional housing challenges.

Town Manager Shannon Tuck provided updates on several ongoing initiatives, including recovery efforts following Tropical Storm Helene and the exploration of "resiliency hubs" – community centers designed to provide support during emergencies. The Town is also preparing for compliance with federal website accessibility requirements, demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity and modernizing town services. Residents can stay informed about these developments through the Town’s official channels.
