Weaverville Tree Board Meeting Recap - March 4, 2026
The Weaverville Tree Board convened on March 4, 2026, for a meeting primarily focused on leveraging recent tree inventory data to enhance the town's understanding and management of its urban forest. The meeting, attended by Tree Board members and representatives from Davie Resource Group (DRG), centered on a presentation detailing how DRG’s inventory will be integrated into Weaverville's Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping system, a crucial step towards improved transparency and proactive tree care. While no formal votes were taken during this informational session, the discussions laid groundwork for future decisions impacting Weaverville’s trees and green spaces.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to understanding how DRG’s tree inventory data will be accessible to residents through ArcGIS Online. This new system will allow anyone with access to the map to view information about individual trees, including species and condition, simply by clicking on their location. The board also engaged in a detailed discussion about invasive plant species, specifically Oriental Bittersweet and English Ivy. DRG clarified that while these plants are classified as invasive, they currently don't pose a direct threat to human health or the environment. They recommended a "cut stump" method for removal, utilizing systemic herbicide application to ensure effective eradication.
Beyond the immediate integration of data, the board explored opportunities for a comprehensive urban canopy assessment – a process similar to one recently completed in Wake Forest. DRG highlighted the availability of grant funding for such assessments and offered training packages to utilize their Treekeeper software, a tool designed to streamline tree inventory management and work order tracking. The possibility of Weaverville staff directly updating the GIS files, allowing for real-time information on tree removals and pruning, was also discussed, contingent upon the town subscribing to appropriate GIS software. Finally, a brief discussion covered how vacant sites are assessed and categorized within the tree inventory data, ensuring a complete picture of Weaverville’s urban forest.
There was no public comment during the meeting, but a key reminder was issued to Weaverville’s Town Council to attend future Tree Board meetings. Following the presentation and discussions, several key action items were identified. Graham Crawford from DRG will be working on importing the data into the GIS system, and DRG is committed to providing more detailed information about Treekeeper software and training options. They will also review the existing spreadsheet data for minor corrections and send an updated copy to Weaverville staff. Crucially, Weaverville’s staff will now consider pursuing a full urban canopy assessment and exploring available grant opportunities to fund this valuable initiative.
This meeting marks an important step forward in Weaverville's efforts to manage and protect its urban forest. The integration of the tree inventory data into the GIS system will provide residents with unprecedented access to information about their community’s trees, while exploring a comprehensive urban canopy assessment promises a deeper understanding of the town's overall green infrastructure. These efforts will contribute to a healthier, more resilient, and aesthetically pleasing Weaverville for years to come.
