Weaverville Town Council Workshop Recap – December 9, 2025

On December 9th, 2025, the Weaverville Town Council held a workshop focused on several key issues impacting our community. The meeting centered primarily around proposed updates to land use regulations, a critical need for fire engine replacement, and recognizing the dedicated service of departing council members. This recap provides a clear overview of what was discussed, decided, and what residents can expect moving forward.

A significant portion of the workshop revolved around proposed changes to the town's land use regulations, driven by a new state statute requiring compliance. Discussions focused on allowing smaller lot sizes for residential development through the introduction of two new zoning districts: the R6 district (allowing up to 6 units per acre) and the R10 district (up to 10 units per acre). The aim of these changes is to streamline the zoning process and potentially reduce the need for more complex conditional district zoning. A minor amendment was also proposed to clarify signage regulations within residential areas, particularly concerning businesses like bed and breakfasts. While a public hearing was held on these proposed changes, with one resident voicing support for the updates, the council ultimately decided to table further discussion and voting on the R6 and R10 zoning districts. Town staff will now prepare visual diagrams to illustrate how these new districts might look in different areas of Weaverville, and the topic will be revisited at a future council meeting.

Beyond zoning, the council addressed an urgent matter: replacing a fire engine experiencing age-related mechanical issues. Recognizing the importance of maintaining both fire safety and a favorable insurance rating for the town, the council unanimously approved moving forward with the purchase of a new engine. Town staff will now begin the procurement process, ensuring Weaverville remains well-equipped to protect its residents. Council Member Doug Jackson emphasized the town's commitment to supporting the North Blunken Fire District, highlighting the importance of a strong fire insurance rating.

The meeting concluded with heartfelt recognition for departing council members Doug Jackson, Michelle Wood, and Catherine Cordell. Their years of dedicated service were acknowledged with appreciation, particularly noting Council Member Wood’s advocacy for preserving the Weaverville Hillside School and Community Center, and Council Member Cordell's work as the town’s French Broad River Metropolitan Planning Organization delegate. Doug Jackson received a special presentation, including a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol on Veterans Day.

  • Continued Discussion: The discussion on zoning districts will continue at a future Town Council meeting. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and participate in the process as it unfolds.
