Weaverville Town Council Meeting Recap – September 22, 2025

The Weaverville Town Council convened its regular meeting on September 22, 2025, addressing a range of topics from hurricane recovery to community engagement and future planning. The meeting began with acknowledgements, including a moment of silence honoring the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Helena, scheduled for September 27th at Lake Louise Park. The Council also expressed gratitude to the town of Weaverville, California for a generous donation supporting local hurricane cleanup efforts.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to routine business, with the Council unanimously approving a consent agenda that included approval of previous meeting minutes, monthly tax refunds, minor budgetary adjustments for the Police and Fire Departments, an ADA accessibility transition plan addressing concerns at town facilities, progress updates on the Stormwater Update Project and Northridge Farm subdivision, demonstrating ongoing efforts to improve town infrastructure and accessibility.

The Town Manager’s report provided updates on several key initiatives, including the gradual arrival of FEMA reimbursements for Hurricane Helena recovery projects – a detailed financial update is expected at next month’s meeting. Residents can look forward to enjoying the newly installed water wheel at Lake Louise Park, a visually appealing addition thanks to the completion of its A-frame installation. The Town Manager also highlighted ongoing staff training programs aimed at professional development, and shared observations from recent “ride-alongs” with town staff in the Fire Department and Sanitation crew, emphasizing their dedication despite facing challenges. A tree inventory assessment by an arborist is scheduled for September 29th, and the town is currently analyzing results from a community engagement survey that garnered over 160 responses. Several new initiatives were announced, including the launch of a music series at the Community Center in October and the incorporation of the Weaverville Economic Development Foundation, a new non-profit focused on stimulating local economic growth. The Council also received an update regarding the County’s exploration of a uniform fire tax district, and learned about a planned vaccine clinic at the Community Room on October 14th.

During public comments, Jeff Niffin, a resident of Maple Trace, praised the success of a recent safety briefing and community engagement program held in his neighborhood, recognizing the efforts of several town staff members. Following this, Councilman Cordell’s report on the French Broad River Metropolitan Planning Organization (FRMPO) was read, outlining transportation planning initiatives including recommendations for highway and bicycle/pedestrian improvements. A key decision was made when the Council approved a resolution formally accepting the completion of street repairs and stormwater drainage system work in Maple Trace, officially integrating these improvements into the town's infrastructure.

Looking ahead, the Town Council is actively working on a comprehensive Hurricane Helena recovery plan in collaboration with the county and incorporating public input. A draft is expected to be presented in November. The town is also developing a strategic plan based on community feedback, with a draft for review anticipated in October. Residents are invited to attend the upcoming Council Workshop on October 21st at 6 p.m., and the next Regular Town Council Meeting is scheduled for October 27th at 6 p.m. These ongoing efforts underscore the Council's commitment to addressing community needs, fostering economic development, and ensuring a resilient future for Weaverville.
