Tree Board Meeting Recap: January 13, 2026 – What You Need to Know

The Montreat Tree Board convened on January 13, 2026, for a productive meeting focused on ongoing projects and exploring potential opportunities to enhance Montreat's tree canopy. While the meeting began with a significant portion dedicated to personal updates and fostering camaraderie among board members, the core of the discussion centered around several key initiatives impacting our town's natural environment. Attendance included most board members, with Ashley absent due to travel, and Dan Wiggs from Public Works providing valuable updates.

A major topic of discussion was the Chestnut Orchard Project, a collaborative effort with the Chestnut Foundation aimed at reintroducing native chestnut trees to Montreat. The project faces a temporary hurdle as the lead scientist has left the organization, but excitement remains high following news that a new representative from South Carolina (residing in Leicester) will be visiting Montreat next week to assess the proposed site and take soil samples. The board recognized Montreat's historical connection to chestnut trees, noting their prominent presence in local woodwork at landmarks like Gaither Chapel and Anderson Auditorium. A key next step is defining a clear "purpose" or mission statement for the orchard, ensuring its long-term success and alignment with community goals.

Beyond the Chestnut Orchard, the board considered an opportunity to participate in North Carolina’s 250th anniversary celebration of the Revolutionary War, but ultimately unanimously decided against applying due to cost and a perceived lack of strong historical connection for Montreat. While passing on this particular opportunity, the board expressed interest in exploring other ways to commemorate the milestone within the town. The Treasure Tree project, which identifies and recognizes significant trees in Montreat, was also discussed. Plans are underway to potentially integrate this project into the upcoming Land Care/Arbor Day Festival in April, possibly including a tree or shrub giveaway.

Public Works provided an update on planned tree removals, with approximately seven to ten trees slated for removal due to safety concerns. Tyler will continue working with Mason on documenting this inventory, ensuring proper procedures are followed. The board also discussed potential collaboration with the town's Land Care initiative, exploring whether there are overlapping legal responsibilities between the Tree Board and this environmental stewardship program.

Key Decisions & Actions Moving Forward:

  • The minutes from the previous meeting were approved.
  • Elizabeth will circulate the Tree City USA application for review, aiming for submission by the end of January.
  • Board members are encouraged to brainstorm a "purpose" or mission statement for the Chestnut Orchard project.
  • Elizabeth will contact Savannah to coordinate a flyer promoting the Treasure Tree walk at the Land Care/Arbor Day Festival.
  • Dan Wiggs will coordinate with the Chestnut Foundation representative during her visit next week.

The Tree Board's work directly impacts Montreat’s beauty, safety, and environmental health. Residents can expect further updates on the Chestnut Orchard project as it progresses, and are encouraged to participate in future events like the Land Care/Arbor Day Festival. The next Tree Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 10th.
