Tree Board Meeting Recap: June 10, 2025 – Protecting Montreat’s Trees & Green Spaces

The Tree Board held a productive meeting on June 10, 2025, focusing on ongoing tree health initiatives, exploring new possibilities for community engagement, and clarifying resident responsibilities regarding property maintenance. The meeting included updates from various stakeholders, introductions of key personnel, and discussions centered around the long-term health and vitality of Montreat’s trees and natural spaces.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to reviewing progress on the Hemlock Treatment Program, a vital effort to combat the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid. Board members and volunteers celebrated the success of the April 29th treatment, which saw 124 trees treated at a cost of $2700 (with the town sharing $1360). Recognizing the ongoing nature of this challenge, the board approved a plan to continue trunk injections for 15 trees and emphasized the need for continued coordination with the Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) and the Cottagers Association. Residents voiced strong support for this ongoing effort, highlighting its importance to Montreat's unique ecosystem. Concerns were also raised regarding the potential for harm from untrained individuals attempting DIY treatments, a point emphasized by newly introduced Arborist Ashley Gantz.

Beyond the hemlock program, the board engaged in preliminary discussions about the “Chesna Program,” a potential initiative to identify suitable tree species for Crestling. While still in the early stages, this exploration aims to ensure Montreat’s green spaces remain diverse and resilient. A key topic of discussion was the introduction of Ashley Gantz, a licensed arborist working with Parker Bagot. She outlined her vision for developing a comprehensive strategy that involves collaboration between the Montreat Residents Association (MRA), College of Emory, town officials, and cottagers. Gantz stressed the importance of professional engagement and responsible chemical use to protect Montreat’s waterways, a message that resonated with the board.

The meeting also included a proposal from George Graham regarding a potential community garden on town property between Virginia Road and Assembly Drive. This initiative, if feasible, would provide a valuable opportunity for community engagement and revitalization of an underutilized space. Finally, Mason from Public Works addressed the recent termination of a federal stream mediation program, emphasizing that residents now have increased responsibility for maintaining their property, particularly regarding creeks. He highlighted the ongoing work of Public Works and urged residents to report tree-related issues promptly.

Key Decisions & Actions:

  • The Tree Board approved the minutes from their previous meeting (May 13th) and the agenda for June 10th.
