Buncombe County Schools Board of Education Meeting Recap - May 2, 2024
On May 2, 2024, the Buncombe County Schools Board of Education convened its regular meeting, attended by all board members except Ms. Churchill, with Mr. Campbell serving as legal counsel. The meeting began with a respectful acknowledgement of tradition, including presentations by T.C. Roberson High School’s JROTC program and a moment of silence honoring first responders. This recap summarizes the key discussions, decisions, and actions taken during this important meeting for our community.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to celebrating student success and recognizing outstanding educators. The Board lauded 21 Buncombe County students accepted into the prestigious North Carolina Governor's School, representing schools across the district. Elisa Baker (Choral Director) was recognized for her 28 years of service and leadership role within the North Carolina Music Educators Association, while Janet Roberts (Exceptional Children Administrator) received the Lighthouse Award from the State Council for Exceptional Children. These recognitions highlighted the dedication and talent within our school system.
The core of the meeting centered on the presentation and approval of the new Buncombe County Schools Strategic Plan for 2024-2027. Developed through extensive community engagement, including town halls and surveys, the plan outlines a clear vision: ensuring every student graduates on time, prepared for their chosen path. The Board unanimously approved this plan, which emphasizes engagement, collaboration, strong family/community partnerships, and a commitment to equity and excellence. The plan’s goals focus on student growth, creating welcoming school environments, developing durable skills aligned with the NC Portrait of a Graduate, and supporting our educators. This strategic plan will guide district priorities for the next three years.
Beyond the Strategic Plan, the Board approved several key action items. They formally approved funding requests for current expenses and capital appropriations, which will now be submitted to the County Commissioners. A decision was made to convey real property to Buncombe County for upcoming construction projects at North Buncombe Middle School and TC Roberson High School. Notably, the Board decided to postpone a decision on joining a multi-district lawsuit against social media companies. Recognizing the significant implications, they opted to solicit public input before making a final determination on this matter. The Board also approved the consent agenda, which included approval of previous meeting minutes, personnel updates, and various policy items.
During the public comment period, community members voiced a range of concerns and priorities. A recurring theme was the need for improved teacher pay and working conditions, with particular emphasis on supporting classified staff. Several speakers highlighted the critical need for increased mental health support and resources for students, alongside advocating for greater funding and staffing to better serve exceptional children. Concerns about the negative impact of social media on students were also raised, reflecting a broader community conversation about student well-being.
Looking ahead, the Board will actively seek public input regarding the potential lawsuit against social media companies. The approved budget request will be presented to the County Commissioners, marking a crucial step in securing funding for our schools. The next Board meeting is scheduled for June 6th, featuring a work session and open session. This meeting will provide further opportunities to engage with the Board as they continue their work shaping the future of Buncombe County Schools.
This meeting demonstrated a commitment to both celebrating student achievements and strategically planning for the future of our school system. The Board’s decisions, particularly the approval of the new Strategic Plan, will have a direct impact on students, educators, and families throughout Buncombe County.
