Board of Elections Meeting Recap: October 29, 2024

On October 29, 2024, the Buncombe County Board of Elections convened a meeting focused primarily on preparations for the upcoming general election. A full board was present both in person and virtually, ensuring a robust discussion on current challenges and ongoing efforts to ensure a fair and accessible election for all registered voters. The meeting was streamed online, allowing for public access and transparency.

A significant portion of the discussion centered around the unexpectedly high volume of early voting turnout, with over 90,000 voters – representing more than 40% of registered Buncombe County residents – already casting their ballots through absentee and early voting as of the meeting date. Director Duncan’s report highlighted the incredible dedication of election staff, who have logged nearly 2,000 hours between October 18th and 27th to manage this surge. While the implementation of “express votes” has streamlined voter processing and improved efficiency, challenges remain. Specifically, parking congestion at several early voting locations (Inca Candler, South Asheville Library, and Weaverville) prompted the deployment of additional parking attendants to alleviate the issue. Minor technical difficulties with voting machines have also been reported and are being addressed promptly by staff, with clear communication provided to all poll workers.

A key debate arose regarding a proposal to extend early voting hours, brought up in response to concerns about accessibility. Mr. Rondell Lance addressed the Board during public comment, expressing apprehension that not extending hours could suppress voter turnout. However, after careful consideration, the Board unanimously decided against extending early voting hours, citing concerns about overburdening staff and potentially compromising election integrity. This decision reflects a commitment to balancing voter access with the practical realities of managing a high-volume election. The Board did acknowledge and commend the ARC shuttle service providing transportation to shelters, a crucial effort ensuring voters have access to early voting locations.

The Board took several key actions during the meeting, demonstrating their commitment to ensuring every eligible voter can participate. They unanimously approved an additional meeting on Friday, November 1st at 3:30 PM to address the growing backlog of absentee ballots. Furthermore, they approved the acceptance of 226 overseas civilian ballots, ensuring that military and overseas citizens have their voices heard in the election.

Looking ahead, staff will continue processing absentee ballots and actively managing parking challenges at early voting locations. They will also closely monitor media coverage related to the election, responding to inquiries and providing accurate information to the public. Residents can stay informed by visiting the Buncombe County Elections website (insert website address here) and accessing recordings of Board meetings, which are streamed online. The Board’s focus remains steadfast: to uphold the integrity of the election process and ensure a smooth, accessible voting experience for all Buncombe County residents.
