Public Art and Cultural Commission Meeting Recap – June 20, 2024

The Public Art and Cultural Commission (PAC), an advisory board to Asheville City Council, convened on June 20th for a meeting focused on ongoing projects and future planning. This recap summarizes the key discussions, decisions, and next steps for residents interested in learning more about public art initiatives within Asheville.

The meeting began with the approval of minutes from the May meeting, a routine item that moved the discussion forward. A warm welcome was extended to Charlie, the new PAC member who will be stepping into the role of chair next month. He’ll receive orientation from both the commission and the City Clerk's office to ensure a smooth transition. A proposed July meeting as a downtown tour, designed to showcase public art and urban trail projects, was initially considered but ultimately postponed until September due to concerns about summer heat.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to updates on several key projects. The commission approved the 2024-2025 Outdoor Special Event Guide, a welcome announcement for event organizers as the guide maintains existing fees and policies. Updates were also provided on the Art Deco Masterpiece project, where semifinalists have been interviewed and a leading candidate has emerged. A potential challenge arose regarding the Broadway Public Safety Station Art Project, as concerns about flood risk have prompted a re-evaluation of its location. The city is now considering the southwest corner of the building as an alternative site. Finally, the commission received a progress report on the “Boosting the Block” project, which involves contracting community facilitator teams and a coordinator to support local initiatives.

The PAC took two formal votes during the meeting: approving the May meeting minutes and adopting the 2024-2025 Outdoor Special Event Guide. There were no public comments submitted prior to the meeting, and when the floor was opened for public comment at the end, no residents chose to speak.

Looking ahead, several action items were identified. The downtown tour idea will be revisited in September. PAC committee working groups, including those focused on bylaws and the Urban Trail, are expected to continue their efforts. The selection panel will finalize the artist for the Art Deco Masterpiece project, and the city will determine a safe and suitable location for the public art at the Broadway Public Safety Station. Residents interested in supporting local artists should note that the Arts Council’s Arts Build Community Grant opens on June 24th. The next PAC meeting is scheduled for July 18th.

This meeting highlighted the PAC's ongoing commitment to supporting public art and cultural initiatives within Asheville, while also addressing practical considerations like event planning and project site selection. Residents can expect further updates on these projects at future meetings, as the PAC continues to guide and advise the City Council on matters of art and culture.
