City Council Recap: May 6, 2024 – Recognizing Contributions & Protecting Local Resources

The City of Morganton Council convened on May 6, 2024, for a regular session marked by recognition of community members and important discussions surrounding local water resources and infrastructure. The meeting began with a patriotic ceremony led by Boy Scout Troop 184, followed by an invocation from Reverend Tom Bland. Mayor Ronnie Thompson introduced the council and key city officials, setting the stage for a productive meeting focused on honoring individuals, addressing critical projects, and safeguarding Morganton's future.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to recognizing contributions within the community. The Council unanimously approved a resolution honoring Jesse O. Peeler, a retiring City of Morganton employee with 30 years of dedicated service in the Public Works Department. Several proclamations were also approved, highlighting National Public Works Week (May 19-25), the Daughters of the American Revolution’s work in marking historic sites, American Legion Auxiliary Memorial Poppy Day (May 24th), and both American Jewish History and Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Months. These recognitions underscored the Council's commitment to celebrating diverse contributions and acknowledging essential public services.

Beyond recognition, the Council addressed several key business matters requiring formal votes. A comprehensive consent agenda was unanimously approved, streamlining approvals for routine items including minutes from the previous meeting, tax releases, and various contracts related to infrastructure improvements. These included modernization of chemical feed systems and structural repairs at the water treatment plant, as well as budget amendments for Silver Creek Pump Station and Flocculation Sedimentation projects. A particularly noteworthy decision was the authorization for the city to partner with Industrial Commons in their application for a $20 million EPA Community Change Grant. If successful, Morganton could receive $2.45 million to support mobility and transportation projects – a significant potential boost for the community. Finally, reflecting concerns about regional water resources, the Council unanimously approved a resolution opposing Charlotte’s request to transfer water from the Catawba River Basin, aligning with Morganton's participation in the Catawba Watery coalition and demonstrating a commitment to protecting local water supplies.

While there were no formal public comments during the meeting, Michael Chapman and Brad Boris from the Water Resources Department spoke briefly about the importance of recognizing public works employees, highlighting their often-unseen dedication. Representatives from the American Legion Auxiliary also expressed gratitude for the Council's support of Poppy Day.

Looking ahead, several important dates and events were announced. The College Street Recreation Center pool and Martha’s Park splash pad will open on May 31st, with registration underway for swim lessons, tennis lessons, and summer camp. Residents are also invited to enjoy the ongoing Farmers Markets (Wednesdays & Saturdays) and the weekly "GIF" music event. The next Downtown Art Crawl is scheduled for May 16th, providing another opportunity to engage with the local arts scene.

What's Next? The Council will continue working with Industrial Commons on the EPA grant application. Staff will also participate in a public hearing regarding Charlotte’s water transfer request, scheduled for May 9th. The resolution honoring Jesse O. Peeler will be presented to him at a later date.

This meeting demonstrated the City Council's focus on recognizing community contributions, investing in vital infrastructure projects, and proactively addressing regional concerns like water resource management. These actions reflect a commitment to ensuring Morganton remains a vibrant and sustainable community for all residents.
