Hendersonville City Council Meeting Recap - March 5, 2026

The Hendersonville City Council convened on March 5, 2026, for a meeting focused on recognizing city employees, addressing community concerns, and moving forward with key initiatives. The meeting began with a moment of reflection and the Pledge of Allegiance, setting a respectful tone for discussions. Council members approved both the agenda and a consent agenda without discussion, efficiently moving through initial procedural items.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to addressing citizen concerns raised during public comment. Tom Appleby voiced worries regarding a recent sewage spill in Mud Creek, advocating for increased testing and potential park closures until the issue is resolved. He also questioned the timing of a transportation bond referendum, suggesting it be placed on the general election ballot. Brett Warner proposed exploring options for acquiring property on Woodcock Drive for land trust use, potentially incorporating affordable housing. He further suggested the city investigate traffic calming measures as an alternative to a widespread speed limit reduction. These comments highlighted ongoing community interest in environmental protection and thoughtful urban planning.

The Council also heard a presentation from the Environmental Sustainability Board regarding their "Hendo Green Partnership" program. This initiative aims to recognize and promote local businesses adopting sustainable practices through certification, inspections, and promotion on the city website. Five businesses have already applied, demonstrating early interest in the program. In recognition of dedicated service, Senior Police Officer Jennifer Drake was formally recognized for 21 years and five months of distinguished service, receiving a ceremonial sidearm. Several city employees were also acknowledged as "Most Valuable Players" for their outstanding contributions, highlighting the dedication and commitment within city departments.

Several key decisions were made during the meeting. The Council unanimously approved the annexation of eight properties, encompassing approximately 13.73 acres owned by the Herta G. Seuss Trust and designated for Signal Hill Townhomes, a significant step in the city's development. The Council also approved Joey Burnett’s appointment to the Environmental Sustainability Board, bolstering that body's capacity. Finally, a celebratory update was provided regarding the recently passed General Obligation Bond for transportation projects, which garnered strong public support (68%). City staff will now finalize paperwork to secure certification and approval from the Local Government Commission.

Looking ahead, the Environmental Sustainability Board is poised to vote on approving the initial cohort of applicants for the Hendo Green Partnership. Preparations are underway for a special, extended July 4th parade to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States. City staff will continue working on finalizing paperwork related to the transportation bond, ensuring a smooth transition into implementation. Residents can find the full meeting transcript and supporting documents on the City of Hendersonville website for a more detailed understanding of these proceedings.
