Hendersonville City Council Meeting Recap – November 6, 2025

The Hendersonville City Council convened its regular meeting on November 6, 2025, addressing a range of topics impacting the community. The meeting began with standard procedural items, including approval of the agenda and a consent agenda covering routine matters. This recap highlights key decisions, discussions, and upcoming opportunities for citizen engagement.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to a compelling presentation by Champions for Wildlife, a local non-profit utilizing art to connect children with the natural world. Tashi Brewster and Alexis Hinchcliffe shared inspiring stories of how their programs cultivate appreciation for wildlife, with a particularly poignant example involving an autistic child finding expression through art. The Council acknowledged the value of this program, which encourages children to explore and document nature in their own backyards.

The Council also celebrated a major achievement: the Sullivan Park stream restoration project was awarded the "2025 Stormwater Project of the Year (Natural Systems)" by the American Public Works Association. This collaborative project, involving the City, North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, RiverLink (responsible for naming the restored stream "Brooklyn Creek"), and Jennings Environmental, successfully addressed erosion, improved stormwater quality, and enhanced the park's recreational value. The project restored 800 feet of stream, reconnected it to the floodplain, and incorporated educational signage.

Turning to zoning matters, the Council approved a rezoning initiative for two properties along Locust Street, shifting their designation from Industrial (I-1) to Central Mixed Use (CMU). Discussion regarding a third property will continue at a later date. The Council also took crucial steps toward securing a $10 million General Obligation Bond to fund vital transportation projects across the city. These improvements will focus on streets, sidewalks, ADA accessibility enhancements, and curb/gutter work. Residents are encouraged to attend a public hearing on December 4th to learn more and provide input on this bond order.

Beyond these major items, City Manager’s report provided several important updates. The city received a significant $1.5 million in FEMA reimbursement funds for flood recovery efforts, demonstrating progress in rebuilding after recent weather events. Furthermore, the city secured two grants: $850,000 for a waterline project on Mills Gap Road and $946,000 to repair sidewalks and storm drainage on 7th Avenue. The Council also acknowledged the upcoming retirement of Fire Chief James Miller, recognizing his years of dedicated service. Finally, discussions were held regarding a future Request for Proposals (RFP) in December for a hotel development on the Dogwood Parking Lot, signaling potential changes to the downtown landscape. The Council voted to cancel its second meeting in November.
