Hendersonville City Council Meeting Recap: June 6, 2024

The Hendersonville City Council convened on June 6, 2024, for a productive meeting focused primarily on finalizing the city’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year (2024-2025) and addressing several key community initiatives. The meeting, attended by all council members (Mayor Barbara Volk presiding), covered a wide range of topics from honoring veterans to reviewing infrastructure projects and approving appointments to key advisory boards.

The most significant outcome of the meeting was the approval of the FY 2024-25 budget, a $62 million plan that reflects both the city's priorities and current economic realities. To support critical public safety enhancements, including a dedicated police officer for the downtown area, the council approved a 3-cent tax increase. Recognizing the importance of retaining and attracting skilled employees, the budget also includes a 5% cost-of-living adjustment for all city staff, with an additional 5% increase specifically for public safety personnel. This decision followed extensive discussion and consideration of community feedback, with Councilmembers Simpson and Lawrence recusing themselves from voting on specific special appropriations due to potential conflicts of interest.

Beyond the budget, the council acknowledged and honored the 80th anniversary of D-Day with a formal proclamation. Following this, Alan Yek from Veterans Healing Farm presented on their vital work supporting veterans and their families through agrotherapy programs. A significant challenge facing the organization was highlighted: they are seeking a new location as their current land will no longer be available after August 15th. The council also received a positive report on the second annual Hendo Earthfest, noting increased attendance and engagement in environmental education. Discussions regarding preliminary design concepts for the NCDOT roundabout project at South Main Street and Honor Air Park were also held, focusing on incorporating landscaping and informational signage to enhance the area. Finally, a request from Housing Assistance Corporation to permanently close an unopened portion of a street was approved.

Several appointments were confirmed during the meeting, filling vacancies on important advisory boards including the Animal Services Advisory Committee, Board of Adjustment, Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee, and Downtown Main Street Advisory Committee. Councilmember Miller was also appointed as the City Council liaison to the Downtown Main Street Advisory Committee, ensuring ongoing communication and collaboration.

The meeting included valuable community input from residents like Lynn Williams, who offered heartfelt thanks for the D-Day recognition. Ken Fitch provided detailed feedback on the budget, emphasizing affordability and recognizing city staff dedication, while Jeffrey Liebert advocated for repaving Church Street. These comments demonstrated a strong community interest in the city’s operations and future plans.

Looking ahead, several action items were identified. The Legal Team and Budget Team will draft contracts with the non-profit organizations receiving special appropriations. City Manager Allison Justice will schedule council conversations on key topics, including Latina outreach and brewery visits to foster community engagement. The city will continue working with NCDOT on the South Main Street roundabout project, and Veterans Healing Farm is actively searching for a new location. Finally, the council will discuss potential locations for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the fire department.

This meeting demonstrated the City Council's commitment to addressing critical issues, supporting community initiatives, and engaging with residents. The approved budget will directly impact the services provided to Hendersonville citizens, while ongoing projects like the roundabout and support for Veterans Healing Farm will shape the city’s future. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about these developments and participate in upcoming council meetings and discussions.
