City Council Recap: February 5, 2024 – Recognizing History, Planning for the Future

The City of Morganton City Council convened on February 5, 2024, for a productive meeting focused on recognizing community heritage, approving key development projects, and streamlining city operations. The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance and an invocation by Reverend George Logan, emphasizing Morganton’s commitment to being a positive place to live.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to celebrating Black History Month. Mayor Ronnie Thompson read a proclamation declaring February 2024 as Black History Month, aligning with the Burke County NAACP's theme "Black History is American History - Celebrate, Educate, Elevate." Alicia Connolly from the Burke County NAACP accepted the proclamation and highlighted the importance of educating residents about both positive and challenging aspects of Black history, announcing a community celebration at College Street Recreation Center on February 24th.

Beyond the recognition of Black History Month, Council addressed several key items impacting residents. The council unanimously approved a rezoning request for property at 0 South Sterling Street, paving the way for business expansion and aligning with the city’s comprehensive plan. A notable decision was also made regarding a property exchange between the City and Western Piedmont Community College. The city will receive approximately 6 acres on Patrick Murphy Drive, a potential site for a future public service station, while the college will receive 26.87 acres on Vine Arden Road for a relocated emergency services training center. Finally, the council approved a resolution initiating the process to permanently close and abandon a portion of Remarco Road, facilitating development by MS & MF Development.

The Council also approved several items on the consent agenda, including approving minutes from the January 8th meeting, setting a date for unpaid real estate taxes (March 6, 2024), and approving a contract with Tyler Technologies for HR and time attendance software. A budget amendment recognizing proceeds from a recent timber sale to the Capital Reserve Fund was also approved, demonstrating responsible financial management.

Looking ahead, residents should be aware of several ongoing and upcoming initiatives. Bethel Park is currently closed for extensive renovations expected to last up to a year, with alternative parks available. The 30th Annual ACC Chili Cook-Off is scheduled for March 15th, and residents are encouraged to mark their calendars. A City Council workshop is planned for Friday, February 23rd at the Morganton Community House to discuss key city priorities.
