Town Council Meeting Recap: October 9, 2025

On October 9th, the Montreat Town Council convened for a meeting that addressed a variety of important topics impacting our community. The session began with a public forum, followed by the regular council agenda, providing residents with opportunities to both hear updates and share their concerns. This recap summarizes the key discussions, decisions, and next steps for Montreat residents.

A significant portion of the public forum was dedicated to an update from the Tree Board, presented by Elizabeth Hamilton. The board celebrated a successful initiative in treating 15 hemlock trees on town property using a cost-effective method, thanks to the generous donation of tree injection services from Ryan Franks (Appalachian Tree Care) and chemicals provided by ArborJet, with assistance from Joe Standard. Residents are encouraged to contact the Tree Board for more information and participate in their upcoming "Treasure Tree Walk," a collaborative event with the Presbyterian Heritage Center and Montreat Resources Association, launching on October 29th. Letta Jean Taylor raised a concern about the recently installed stop signs on Appalachian Way, citing visibility and safety issues, particularly during winter weather. The Police Chief acknowledged the concern and assured the council would review the placement of these signs.

During the regular meeting, the Council approved several key items impacting town operations and finances. They unanimously adopted the agenda and consent agenda, which included approval of minutes from previous meetings. A positive update was provided by Town Manager Savannah Fannum regarding FEMA reimbursements for disaster relief efforts, with two checks totaling $85,593.13 received for repairs to Welch Field and town wells. The council also approved a budget amendment #3, crucial for managing cash flow related to ongoing disaster recovery. In a significant organizational change, the council appointed Angie Murphy as the town's Tax Collector, separating this role from the Finance Director position. Finally, demonstrating a commitment to community well-being, the council unanimously adopted a proclamation recognizing October as Domestic Violence Prevention and Awareness Month.

Beyond these formal decisions, the council provided residents with a reminder of several upcoming events and dates to mark on their calendars. These include a Special Town Council Meeting (October 10th), Tree Board Meeting (October 14th), Planning & Zoning Commission and Board of Adjustment Meetings (October 23rd), Bulk Pickup (October 28th), Election Day (November 4th), and the next Town Council Meeting (November 13th).

What's Next? Residents can expect further action regarding the concerns raised about stop signs on Appalachian Way, as the council will review their placement and visibility. The "Treasure Tree Walk" offers an engaging opportunity to learn more about Montreat's natural heritage, launching on October 29th. The separation of the Tax Collector role from the Finance Director position will streamline town financial operations, and residents are encouraged to participate in upcoming events like Election Day. For more information on any of these topics, residents are encouraged to contact the relevant town departments or visit the town website.
